I have been reading a great deal on here and am trying to decide on parasite control schedule. I have some questions and would appreciate any opinions/advice:

1. Due to it being past time for treatments I am going to use Wazine first.

2. I am going to follow up with Valbazen wormer 11.36% (purchased at local CoOp for approx: $40 for the 500 ml)

Questions: How long should I wait to followup with the Valbazen: 10 days or 14 days? Also is it okay to feed the eggs back to the chickens from the Wazine dose until I dose them with the Valbazen? I will not feed the eggs back to them once I use the Valbazen. Dosage on the Valbazen is it .077 x bird weight in pounds to get an exact dosage or is there another method?

I am going to give them scrambled eggs & whole buttermilk after worming. And considered adding Nutri-Drench to their water. For 3 days or so after each treatment.

3. After this year I am going to follow up the Valbazen with Safeguard. 1 cc giants, 3/4 cc large fowl, 1/2 cc standard fowl & 1/4 cc bantam.

Question: Is this the correct dosage or do I need to find a formula & get an exact weight?

3. Mite/Lice treatments. I use Sevin & DE in their dust bath areas. I put Sevin dust in the coop (on roosts, any cracks, top of litter & nest boxes. I am not sold on the DE but since I have it I will use it up. I have also dusted the birds but do not like doing this. As a last resort I sprayed my flock with Frontline spray at a rate of 3 sprays for large birds & 2 sprays for the med/large ones (The way I view this is: I spray my dogs/cats and they sleep in the house, get on the beds and I pet them so I don't think its going to cause me to consume any more by spraying the chickens)

Questions: Are there any better ways to treat for Lice/Mites? Would Ivomec or Permethrin work better? I have had mites in the past but just recently one of my roosters contracted lice (had never seen it before hence the immediate spray with Frontline).

4. Bedding. I have used pine and cedar shavings. I use pine with young chicks but with my older birds I mix in some cedar. I have seen posts about the oils in the cedar being bad for birds but I always thought it was just bad for chicks. I know cedar will deter many insects whereas pine will not.

Questions: Cedar vs Pine vs Pine/Cedar mix? Pros & Cons?

I am going to schedule my worm treatments for September and March. I live in E. TN so our winters are not usually bad & by doing this 2x a year at these times I will get them ready for Winter & Summer.

If anyone sees any flaws in my plans please advise or if you know a better way please share.

I want to thank bario and dawg53 for all the information I have gained from their posts/member pages. Also thanks to all the other member's posts I have read to gain this much of an understanding of parasite control.

Also if I this in not the correct place to post this please let me know. I am still new & do not want to offend anyone. Thank you

The Valbazen is given twice, 10 days apart, and the withdrawal is 14 days, so there is a total of 24 days withdrawal. There is no need to start with Wazine or to follow up with Safeguard. Valbazen kills all worms, and acts in a way that the treatment does no harm even if they are heavily infested. Some people treat once a year, some 4 or times -- and some, never.

Sevin is the usual treatment of lice and mites, though permethrins are also fine, as are pyrethrins. I'm not familiar with using Frontline for this. You treat the chickens and their area twice, 10-14 days apart, as the first treatment does not kill eggs. As far as I know. the most effective treatment is Sevin. You must dust the birds (put in paper bag up to the neck with the Sevin and roll around good, or dust with a "powder puff" method.) "Poultry dust" or spray is often found in feed stores and is usually pyrethrins and permethrin. Adams flea and tick spray is the same thing, or used to be, anyway. It's usually recommended to clean the coop entirely and spray or dust it with each of the two treatments.

DE will kill some lice / mites but will not stop an infestation. I have never found any documentation that it has any effect on internal worms.
