I lost a chicken yesterday, and decide to go ahead as a preventive and worm my chickens today... Well later this morning I noticed I had another roo, not looking like he felt so good... can I go ahead and treat with an antibiotics or do I have to wait a certain amount of time after the worming? I wormed with wazine (sp) and the the antibiotics I want to give is called....duramycin-10 Tetracycling Hydrochoride soluble powder... how much of this would I mix to one gallon of water??? I just checked on my roo, he is eating and drinking ( the water has the wormer in it) but he is having very runny almost water diareha... any suggestions helps??? I don't want to lose another roo, and now I am worried I may have an illness with my chicks.. thanks for any help you can provide...

Hi Smithfam0908.

It's funny that you have started this thread as just a week ago I lost one of my hens to gape worm. I treat them every 2-3 months, and I was using Flubenvet mixed in with their pellets and corn. then I ran out and I couldn't find any more of the stuff in time so i started using something else which a pet store were selling. My hens became really thin so I went to a vet with one (she was sneezing too) he diagnosed her as having gape worm because the stuff I'd been worming them with doesn't work. the hen died a week later and we discovered that, not only had she got gape worm but also an infection in the throat thought to have been caused by the worms which prevented her from digesting food, even though I saw her eating. i've started using Flubenvet (which the vet gave me) again and my other hens are recovering. To cut a long story short, I would get advise from a vet about what worming stuff to use and they'll probably give you a prescription as some medicines sold for chickens and other poultry don't work (as I now know!)! The stuff you've got will probably work, i'm not saying that stuff doesn't, but my ignrance led to my chicken's death (she was my favorite too).

I can't help with the antibiotics but I'm sure someone else will respond who can!

hope this helps,

P.S another of my hens was the sister of the hen that died . They were like one chicken and did everything together so when one died the other seemed to be really low and I was worried she was on her way out too but she has recovered now. I know it is strange to think chickens can act this way and I was very surprised but she definately was "depressed" about her sister's death!

Thank you so very much... Well I have gone ahead after tons of research that I probably have gapeworm... So I went ahead and gave each chicken Fenbendazole. I heard that this will kill it.. Hopefully I am able to save the roo, he has a friend and they are inseperable.. I am just so upset to know that wazine only took care of roundworms and nothing else... All this time I thought I was doing something good and protecting them, and I was wrong, I lost 2 chickens so far and I praying this ends now... I also thought the cayane pepper was helping but I guess not... So I am holding off the antiobotics for now and seeing if this makes a difference.... Thank you again for your very kind reply!!!
