Worming Goats

In the old days some farmers used chewing tobacco to worm their animals. It too is toxic, and guess what it doesn't kill worms. There are many "folk remedies"' that people ascribe to, it doesn't mean there is one once of benefit in them, it is just what some people do. Is it wrong, well maybe not, unless you consider neglecting the health and welfare of the goat important. Will it continue, sure, just like some people bury a dish wrag under the back steps to get rid of warts. You'll never convince those folks there is a better way.

Now for a little FYI, Hoeggers has an herbal wormer, and they swear by it, but IF you do the reasearch, you will find Hoeggers is owned by two women, and their support of the herbal wormer is based upon the benefits in their limited herds.

If I didn't want to use chemical wormers, I would not worm at all. It will take 10+ years, and many deaths, but after 5-7 generations you will see a more parasite resistant herd.

How is chemical vs. herbal(which are ALSO chemicals, thank you chemistry major) off topic? Is it not still about which wormer to use? Must be losing my mind...

I'm not touching that. And neither should you.

In the FIFTEEN years I've been raising goats, I have gone from an all-natural (no wormers, no minerals, no supplements or medications of any kind) horned proponent to a disbudding, preventative maintenance, responsible medication weilding breeder. You will get there eventually too. I know you will, sometimes the goats have to suffer while you take the long way.

I believe you know what I meant when I said chemical vs herbal, Miss specific. And I should say in the five years I'VE been raising goats, my mom had owned goats for 18 years before we got goats again, 5 years ago. As for horns, minerals, supplements, and preventions, We disbud at a week old, the kids are raised on CAE prevention just to be thourough, we give free choice of a variety of minerals and baking soda. Thank you very much.

Wow...

There is a lot of good information here, and I appreciate reading all the opinons and experiences of those much better at raising goats than me, but this thread is getting ugly!

It should be noted that details are what counts, nine times out of ten. One should always read the fine print. Like on the labels where it says "not approved by the FDA" or "not intended to prevent or treat..."

You are quite welcome. Glad you could come out a play; I love a spirtited debate...

Ksacres, I don't know about you. I'm not sure whether to laugh and call you humorously silly, or

The next time I get a pig I might have to call her Tina.
Yes, Tina and Nancy.

Speaking of duct tape, I was once duct taped to a bed because I have a smart mouth. Too bad my brain doesn't always keep up.

well guess what, I never said anything about chemical or toxins.
I just mentioned that I did use chewing tobacco on my goats, and guess what, the worms ceased..I did not try any other treatment.was it coincidence? might be. did it work? I would say yes.. you will not change your mind.. have you ever tried it? didn't work for you?? too bad..

to OP. try the tobacco. If it does not work, try something else..

many of today's medicines came from "old wives remedies".. and many of the ingredients come from natural sources, yet..
