Worming Help Please

I've been reading the archives quite a bit over the past week trying to figure out why my almost 12 week old EE pullet is so much thinner and scruffier than her cohorts. It sounds like worms and from her poop today, I think it is. In the meantime, I ordered Ivermectin from Culter Pheasant and Poultry Supply based on a rec on this board. All they had was Ivermectin powder and I didn't think twice about it until it arrived today. I haven't a clue how to administer it as everyone else seems to use an injectable or pour on.

It is labeled for swine and says to mix 12 oz into 4.875 lb of Ivermectin Swine Feed to Manufacture Complete Type C Medicated Feed containing 1.8 to 11.8 g of Ivermectin per ton. Huh??

And how much would that be for my 12 week old pullets?

Can anyone offer a new egg some advice?

Boy, that's a tough one. Right now you could probably run by a feed store or TSC, and get some Wazine, one ounce per gallon and let the chickens have only that for a day. The most common worms are round worms.
I hope someone else knows how to measure out the ivermectin.

Thanks both of you. I'm glad I'm not the only one who found that direction hard to interpret.

Guess I'll have to go to a TSC tomorrow and search out Iver-on or another alternative. Thanks!

I was trying to get the same question answered last week so hopefully someone will chime in here. I've been afraid to dose my 12 week olds with the Ivermectin 1% without someone else saying they've done it and how much, but no one answered me. I, too, have scoured both BYC and the net and found contradicting information on the dosage for the injectable when not injecting the birds. What I finally got multiple times was to mix 1cc or ml per quart of water. Also that it was ok to use it as a spot on, either under the wing or on the back of the neck, 2 drops for smaller birds, 4 for standards. No one said if either was safe for juvenile birds though.

So I guess what we really need to know, has anyone wormed their young birds with Ivermectin?

I'm treating for gape worm and they had Wazine a week and a half ago as a light wormer as it was suggested.

I have read that pumpkins and/or pumpkin seeds are particularly good for the intestinal health of chickens. I bought several (you can get them real cheap the day after Halloween) and the chickens loved them. Haven't tried them over a long enough period to know if it actually helps them or not, but they sure like them.

DO NOT use ivermectin - too easy to give a fatal dose to chickens.

The poster who said use Wazine is correct - it's easy to get from most feedstores, and I've never had a problem with getting the chickens to drink water treated with it

However, you didn't say what the poop looked like - did you see worms?

If you saw blood, and its a young bird, the problem is more likely to be coccidia. In which case, the wazine wouldn't be effective. There's stuff like Corid to treat for this, when the stuff in the starter ration doesn't work. I only ever have a problem when it's been really wet, and I've had a leaky waterer.

Glad the post was ninja'ed because I so wouldn't want to give the birds a fatal dose.

The poop was pretty mushy and very small white things in it. Of course, I studied the poop photo page and am not sure they are worms. I just don't know what else to do for this particular chicken. She's very scruffy looking, has lost some feathers under her chin and is much thinner even though she eats like crazy.

I do have loads of pumpkins though so I'll probably put one of those out there just for fun too. Any other advice or is it really to stick with the Wazine?

Now I'm super confused...why is it recommended on every poultry site to treat gape worm? Since Wazine doesn't treat gape, what do I do? I treated with Wazine already and they are still headshaking/gaping with no other symptoms. I posted a video of the headshakes on my youtube--http://www.youtube.com/jayde303 I found tons of posts about using ivermectin 1% used on chickens... I've even seen a few posts saying how it's nearly impossible to overdose chickens on ivermectin... Can anyone clear this up?
