Worming question

Yes, they free range every day. There are lots of wild birds flying overhead and I'm sure pooping in our yard. Lots of bug eating. They are in a covered run with sand, and DE mixed into it which I clean every day. I used Wazine, the bottle says every 30 days to break the large roundworm cycle.

Uhhh...no, that is not scientific proof of anything, that is speculation. Science requires a controlled experiment and a stastically significant number of tests to be run under a variety of conditions. 2 chickens testing negative for worms in a once per year test over a 3 year period, in one climate, one coop, one flock, one location who get an occasional unmeasured sprinkling of DE in their food at irregular / random periods is not really proof of anything.

No need to worm with wazine every 30 days, you'd be tossing eggs forever! Wazine only gets rid of large roundworms. It is set out as the only source of water for 24 hours for your chickens to drink...after 24 hours, discard. Dont eat the eggs for 14 days. On the 14th day reworm your chickens with a different off label wormer such as; Safeguard (fenbendazole) equine paste or safeguard liquid goat wormer. You can use ivermectin pour on, eprinex pour on...these are cattle wormers. You can use Valbazen(albendazole) cattle/sheep wormer. These are all broad spectrum wormers that kill many different type of worms that chickens can get. It's your choice which one to choose, but you wont have to worm your chickens possibly for a long time.

Thanks! They are only 14 weeks old so they aren't laying yet so I don't have to worry about that part. When using the off label wormer, how do you know how much to give? I appreciate all your advice and suggestions!

Thats one nice thing about the fenbendazol, it would take a huge overdose to cause problems. A dab of 10% paste about the size of a pea or eraser on end of a pencil will be about right. It would likely take a full horse sized tube of wormer to reach LC50 where you might expect to kill a good sized chicken.

Should be about $10 for a single horse sized tube of wormer, some of the pour-on wormers are more expensive as they a sized to treat many animals.

I used the liquid for my birds and mixed it in the water for a couple of days. ACCIDENTLY, a few of my birds got hold of the paste : ( CRAZY THINGS loved it. I use the paste on my pot belly pigs. I squirt the right dosage on a slice of bread and feed the whole thing to the pigs. THEY HATE IT and spit it out - - -The chickens ran over and stole it ! They loved it!

SO YES they can take a large dosage without side effects and they love the paste so it is pretty easy to administer. You just have to make sure each individual bird gets their share !

So horse wormer and each one gets about a pea size blob? I can do that? I hand feed them stuff all the time! No need to follow up in 10 15 days on this one as well? Just this one dose? Then how will I know when they need it again?
