Worming

I've never wormed by chickens before, and I've never had an issue with worming. But I am just wanting to be careful since I know other people in the area that have worms right now.

What is a natural dewormer other then DE (I am having a hard time finding any DE) I can only find Stall Dry which contains DE but I can't feed that to the chickens. I have just been using in the coop.

Can you use ivermectin in chickens, how long do you have to wait before eating eggs.

Is their any other natural de worming options? Or something not as pricey as Ivermectin?

Verm-x is natural and you can still eat the eggs while on the dewormer. I think you can look at vermx.com to order it.

Verm-x, DE, cayenne pepper, VtRx are preventatives and will not kill worms. If you've never wormed before, I would recommend that you do. Start out with wazine 17, wait 2 weeks (discard eggs), then use ivermectin pour on or safeguard. Wait another 2 weeks (discard eggs.) I know one month of throwing eggs away is lousy,but better than wormy chickens that wont produce eggs due to the lack of nutrients the worms are stealing from your hens.

Thanks done. Does Ivermectin come in oral form at the feed store? I know they have injectable.

I dont know Anny. I've always used the ivermectin pour on. I bought it at Tractor Supply. The reason I prefer using the pour on is that it will kill and prevent lice and mites on chickens,a double benefit from using the pour on besides killing worms. Make sure you use wazine17 first!

dawg, for us newbs could you give a basic description of treating with ivermectin. Mixing, application (whole bird?, between the wings?, under the wings?, ???), etc.,.

It'd be mighty helpful.

You will need a syringe with a needle, 25 gauge, NOT for injection,but for accuracy. I used a 20 guage needle,couldnt find a 25 guage. There is no mixing with ivermectin pour on, it's ready to go. Remember, you should use wazine17 first. Wazine is a mild wormer that paralyzes roundworms only, doesnt kill them. The roundworms are either absorbed in their system or excreted in their poop if there's an infestation. The reason you dont use ivermectin first is because it will kill all kinds of worms besides just roundworms. The overload of dead worms in the chickens' system will turn toxic and possibly kill the chicken. Ivermectin should be used about 2 weeks after using wazine. Ivermectin will not kill tapeworms,you will need valbazen to kill tapeworms. Ivermectin dosage using your syringe: I recommend using latex gloves while doing the worming. Put the drops directly on bare skin on the back of their neck,almost between their shoulders. If you get a drop on the feathers, it's not known what the results will be,that's why it's imperative to get it on the skin. Ivermectin absorbs very quickly too. Small chickens ie... speckled hamburgs, leghorns,easter eggers- 3 drops to the back of the neck. Sex link chickens-4 drops. Plymouth rocks, rhode island reds, buff orpingtons,black australorp's- 5 drops. Jersey Giants, big hens and big roosters-6 drops. Ivermectin has a withdrawal time of 14 days as does the wazine. You should throw away eggs for a total of one month. Ivermectin pour on will also kill lice and mites,more bang for the buck. Even after using wazine,you'll see your lethargic hens perk up in a day or two and start laying eggs more frequently and act like a chicken should. When you go to worm them again, I recommend using a different wormer such as safeguard instead of ivermectin. This prevents worms from building immunity to ivermectin. I hope this helps.

I understand the staggered worming and why we should use Wazine17 first...much like giving a dog a heartworm pill when they have a bad infestation....toxic shock.
