worms or maggots - HELP

I have a chicken who is finally back in the coop after weeks of fighting a wound that was infested with maggots. I did not notice the problem either, until she was really sick. WHen I picked her up and checked her out she had a deep puncture wound from the rooster and it was crawling with maggots. I nearly threw up on my own chicken. I separated her and put in a a pet crate in the garage, set a fan on her so the flies would not land. I washed the wound daily, sprayed it with peroxide, used antibiotic ointment and also bluekote alternately. I also got an oral antibiotic from the farm supply and gave her that in her water. She was so bad at one point my husband wanted to cull her. I could not do it and she finally got better. She is now back out in the coop with the other girls. she has not started laying again, but she is soooo much better.

I REMEMBER reading on another thread about how maggots go inside the body so kudzu, just keep doing what you have been doing until you don't see any crawl out when you do the peroxide....I am praying for you and your girl.....

Good, stick with it. So many people see the worms, see the wound, freak out, then put the bird down without trying the treatment. It is horrible to look at but the treatment works and the birds recover. Everyone has this problem sooner or later. Yes, it sounds like the wound is doing much better. You'll find the SWAT in the horse supplies section. One treatment will probably do the trick but do another in 2-3 days. Then just keep an eye on it after that. If you're worried about infection you can always add an antibiotic. I didn't with mine, he was good to go.

Bobbie the BR is still with us. Began washing, had to use peroxide and did get my hands on SWAT. She's not eating very well, but is still with us. I didn't see maggots. I hope I found it in time. Thanks so much for all of your replies. At this point, it will just take some time. Great to have all of you there so quickly with such good advise.

use wazine 17, .5 ml in mouth if small breed (5ib or smaller) (1ml if larger breed) found at any feed store.
