My first three girl quails have been looking tatty since June. Could it be worms??? Eggs seem ok and a good weight, 12g -13g. They are about 10 months old now. The three males that came with them seem fine as do the four new girls who are 5 months old. Two of the old girls have been away from males for 2 months but still looking tatty so I don't think over breeding is the issue, but it may have started this ruffled feather look. I am considering heygates feed with added flubenvet (for chickens really, can't find a quail one) I am in England. What does anyone think? Do you regularly worm quail? Sorry no pics, no camera.

I doubt this is worms, rarely do birds looks so tattered from internal parasites. Do they have access to grass and dirt? Caged quail rarely get worm overloads. We are coming up on molting season. Are there feathers laying around? Any aggression from the others pulling feathers? What is their main diet?

Yes, access to grass and dirt, they are out in a run every day if weather permits. Their main diet is Heygates breeders pellets.

QUAIL BREEDER/LAYERS PELLETS
19.5% PROTEIN
A 2mm micro pellet with a unique balance of energy, protein, minerals, vitamins and essential amino acids to promote egg production.

It would be best for you to gather fresh fecal samples and put them in a ziplock bag. Then take them to a vet for a look under a microscope for worm eggs. Then the vet will let you know if they have worms or not.
Useful... I have a microscope!
