Just found this in the coop poop tray - it was more in the poop but I separated it out. Assuming it’s a worm - any idea what type and how do I treat? Obviously I’ll treat the whole gang, 9 girls and 2 boys. We are going away at the end of the week….is one treatment enough? Side effects? Should I take it in to our avian vet to do a poop analysis? Many thanks!

That's a roundworm.

You can use Safeguard liquid goat dewormer.
To treat Roundworms only, dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once, then repeated in 10 days.

Valbazen can also be used. Dose is 0.08ml per pound of weight given orally once, then repeated in 10 days.

Thank you! Is it a good idea to deworm regularly or just when I see evidence? My oldest are almost 2 years now and I haven’t seen anything until now and everyone seems healthy and happy.

Some people deworm on a regular basis while others don't.

Seeing worms expelled like that, the load is likely heavy, so if it were me, I'd deworm at least twice a year, but you may find that you need to more often.

That’s good to know, thank you! Not a fan of the worms I have to say 😂

If I weigh my chickens by using the difference between my weight and my weight + theirs when I hold them, and say the difference comes out to be 1.6, should I go only by the pound (as in 1 x 0.23), or should I do 1.6 x 0.23?

1.6 x 0.23
Is it safe to overdose by a little bit? I plan on applying it to bread and feeding it to those I know will eat it, but I know some of my chickens won’t, so I plan on administering it by syringe to those chickens. A couple of them tend to flail about when I hold them, so sometimes a little bit leaks out of their mouths. If, say, one chicken requires 0.8 ml, but I gave them 1 ml to compensate for the potential loss of some of the dewormer, would that be okay or no?

Safeguard and Valbazen are safe wormers. It would take alot more than 1ml to OD a chicken.

Okay so I dewormed them. Is it normal to keep seeing worms afterwards? I believe I read that it was, but I’d just like to get some confirmation.
