IN a book I have on chickens called Storeys guide to raising chickens, it says that a worm called a gape worm that invades the windpipe. Signs are: coughing gasping and head shaking (in an attempt to dislodge the worm) my chickens are all shaking their heads about ever fifteen seconds. No coughing or gaspins, but I am still worried. What do you think it is???

It is really inexpensive to worm a chicken. Just add some wormer to their water. It can be found at any farm supply store. They may not have it - but it won't hurt.

Wild birds transmit them to chickens.

I agree. I use Wazine..I use it sometimes to prevent worms.

Wazine (piperazine) only works on roundworms. It is completely ineffective on gapeworm, tapeworm, capillaria and numerous other internal parasites. I recommend that you ask that this thread be moved to the emergency section--worming is discussed there fairly frequently.
