worms??

my cinnamon stopped laying a few days ago and today I noticed her vent was all crusted. went to go clean her off and noticed a soft shell hanging out and a TON of small white worms with a black end that moved snakelike. my initial thought was maggots, but idk what roundworms or something of the effect would look like. They are covering her vent. I asked my husband to take a picture and when I looked they all are blurry. i'll post them anyway but idk how much hel

p they will be.

Those appear to be maggots. I believe you're dealing with "flystrike." Here's a link with a few pics and treatments for you to read and look at:

I'm looking in to that right now. thanks so much! What can I do to keep flies to a minimum around the coop? it's been super hot and dry here so they are baaaaaad.

You can put sand in your pen or run, it will help in controlling flies. Additionally, sand wont wash away in a rainstorm and dries quicker than dirt. Automobile Christmas tree "vanilla scented" air fresheners hung around the pen seems to deter flies. It was recommended by others a couple of years ago in the BYC Pest and Predator forum and I gave them a try. They seemed to work well. It might be worth a try for you given the circumstances with your hen.

thanks again for the help. I heard also you're the go to guy for worming? I have chickens of different ages and breeds (a 15 week old silkie, barred rock, bantam cochin, lav orpington, 24 weeks old isa, full easter egger and cinnamon and 2 new hens as of today) what should I do for worming if anything? never done it and they have never had it.

You can purchase valbazen liquid cattle/sheep wormer and administer it orally undiluted using a syringe without a needle. Dosage is 1/2cc orally for standard size birds, 1/4cc for smaller birds. Redose again in 10 days. There's a 14 day withdrawal period after the last dosing.
