What do you guys do when your run is worn to dirt? Should I move their pen or just let them scratch in the dirt? I know that if I plant grass they will just rip the seeds out.

I ended up putting mulch on the bottom of their run

They had a hay day!

if your run is big enough, block half off, and seed one side and let grow tell its nice and full, then let them on that side and seed the other side,.

the leafs is a good idea to, also through down some soft hay, the same horse would eat

I concur with Omran. Use a small garden tiller and dig it up every so often. They dust bathe and hunt for insects/worms for days. Since my soil compacts down I add leaves/mulch/sand etc. to keep it loose and from turning to mud pie.

My runs are all DG to keep them nicely conditioned (show birds). They compact it pretty tightly sometimes, so I till the soil every so often. Just did that recently... they had a blast playing in it.
