Hi everyone! I have a two year old easter egger rooster, and lately I have noticed his crow sounds different, what in the world could it be? I'm new at this and this is the first problem I have encountered. Any advise will be helpful. Thanks!

How is he behaving otherwise? Is he not as active? Standing around with his tail held low? When you get close to him and listen to his breathing, does it seem to make crackling sounds?

If you answer yes to any of the above, he could be sick. Even if he is acting okay, he may have the beginning of a tumor on his vocal chords.

Or he is having a temporary bout of hoarseness.

He acts and looks normal, he is eating and as far as I can tell I don't hear any crackling. If it is a bout of hoarseness how long will this last? Just wondering how long I should let this go on before I need to take him to an vet. Thanks

If you are concerned and you have access to an avian vet, by all means let the vet take a look at him. I'm a big advocate of getting on something at it's early stage. Listen to your instincts.

A possibility is that he's swallowed something that is lodged in his wind pipe. You can have someone hold him and hold his beak open while you shine a light down his throat to inspect it. Sometimes a horse or human hair gets wrapped around the tongue or a splinter or twig gets lodged in there. A vet will have an x-ray machine or some other instrument to see farther down.
