Worried about the cold

Waving Hi to Ducks R Us! What part of NoDak are you in? I'm in the Minot area... In our area, we are supposed to get up to 7 tomorrow which is good since I need to run the hose out to fill the horses water, probably will fire up the grill now that DH was kind enough to dig it out of the snow for me.

Yes, ducks do fine in the cold. The part you need to watch is the fact that they are living on the pond. Keep an eye on them, ducks like to dive and if they come up under the ice they can drown. I can't tell how thick that ice is, is it thin enough for them to break through if they get under it? Nice looking set-up!

Hi Dakota folks !!!!
I saw on the news yesterday that it was like -37 degrees in Fargo !!!! They said if you put an ice cube out doors the temp would have to RISE by 66 degrees in order for that ice cube to melt !! UNREAL !!! Hope those duckies didn't hear that report. LOL .........yes, I can laugh, I don't live there.

My mallard ducks keep a small area of the pond open, it's right where the spring feeds into it, so that helps, but they just keep the water unfrozen by flapping their feet in it... they fly up to the garden to eat and drink warm water with peas, and then back to the pond ASAP... they seem happy!

Your ducks keep their own water ice free? Oh boy, can they come teach my ducks how to do it? Mine line up around the pool waiting me to break it and pull it out piece by piece and flat out refuse to get in until the very last shard is out.

Thanks for all the comments. My ducks survived last night (9 degrees/windchill -5) & seem none the worse for wear. The pond is solidly frozen over this AM, chipped out a spot for them to drink & it froze right back. Suppose to be just as cold tonight too.
Brrrr,we're not used to these temps here in western NC like you all up north!

Skyjams...glad the duckie kids survived ok. I know how you feel...worry about my chickie kids all the time ! I bet I go back and forth to those 2 coops at least 10 times a day. I'll be getting about 15 duckie kids in the spring.
LOVE this duckie site and all the great posts...learned a lot.

I thought my ducks had it bad

....last week we got down to 30 at night and 50 during the day. But this week we are up to 65 degrees and running around in t-shirts and 35 at night.

Good ol' southern AZ.

Your ducks should be fine, you might want to just keep an eye on them to see if anyone is limping. If you see one limping then he/she might have gotten a foot problem. They are desinged to be in cold weather and be just fine. I love your pics too by the way.
