Hey girls, you don't have to go to the store for yogurt!!! Miss Prissy has a post on the recipe section in the forum for making your very own homemade yogurt and it is the absolute best you will ever taste, very, very easy to make ( just ask any one here that has made it) and sooo much cheaper and better for you than that so- called - yogurt you buy. It really is de-lish, and my 5 week old girls go after it so much better then that so- called- yogurt that is storebought. It is soo much thicker then the store bought and you will be so proud of yourself when you do it. C'mon just give a try, you know you want to!!

Well, as long as nobody is lethargic and the one bloody poo was just a fluke, I'd give them a big chuck of dirt from their future run to get them started up on building immunities to the bugs you have outside. Best of luck and hope they are doing well!

I know, I know! I just haven't gotten a thermometer yet. I was thinking of trying to make some without one......

And I want to make the cheese, if I could only find the recipe again! Takes ALL day just to go thru that thread!

With the long weekend coming up I may just try it.
I have to find the recipe again.

Okay girls, got to the index section, click on the eggs and chicken recipes section and look for miss prissy yogurt recipe page. If you go to her posts she even has pictures showing each step for us. You can get a thermometer at Walmart pretty cheap, and some of the bigger grocery stores that sell kitchen gadgets will have them too. Have fun, it really does only take about 20 minutes to make it start to finish. The longest part is boiling enough water to fill and heat you cooler. There is also a great website that tells you how to make it step by step and offers different ways to incubate it alsl. A very good site www.dvo.com Enjoy, Trudy

Hey,

I've made yogurt, too, but I incubated mine by putting the container on a heating pad (set on low) with a big stock pot inverted over it to keep the temp. steady. Worked fine. And if you put some finished yogurt in an ice cube tray and freeze it, you have your starter for next time. Or to thaw and use for chicks as needed, no worry about it going bad.

My chicks are 3 weeks old, but I moved the coop recently and it isn't secure around the base yet, so they can't go out in it - should I give them some dirt from the run at this age? or not yet? or when? It's bad enough the shavings in the brooder go into the waterer, can't wait till they can fling dirt around, too!
