So, we put 35 eggs in the 'bator around 5pm Saturday. I am so worried that none of them will hatch. I already told my girls that they would be very lucky if one or two hatched, because I don't want them to be disappointed.

There were 3 nests in the coop, one for each hen. They each had well over 10 eggs in them, we threw out about 10 that were cracked. I was all for letting the momma's set their own eggs, but my SIL convinced the girls (and dh) that the hens wouldn't lay anymore eggs this year if we didn't take them. Plus we were going to have to move the birds and coop anyway due to a cracked septic line that ran right under their coop. The hens didn't appear to be actually setting on the eggs anyway, but still I worry that we may have harmed their chance. BTW the hens are banties, one Mille fleur and 2 seabrights and they have one MF rooster.

So I figure, some of the eggs are probably too old to be viable? I don't know how long they have been laying. My girls got the birds last spring, and just keeping them alive was a major feat. Dh and I buy the food, and he built them an A frame coop, but otherwise we have stayed out of the whole thing. Really my younger girl gave up as soon as it got chilly out, but my older girl is faithful about watering and feeding, but wants to "do it her way". My girls are 10 and 11 (almost 12). I am only involved now because she asked for my help.

We just have a cheapie LQ styrofoam incubator. The temp is staying pretty steady, I tested the thermometer it came with with one of the digi's we use at the lab I work in. I know it is accurate, and staying between 99.5 and 101. I don't have a hygrometer, need to poke around the lab and see if I can find an old one. Just put a little bit of water in the wells, and figure we can fill it up when it gets empty. I live in OH, so the outside humidity is around 88% according to the weather.com. So I think we should be OK on humidity. I have both vents open for good air flow. They are in a room with a steady temp, and I have impressed on the girls that to leave them alone (other than turning) is the best thing that can be done.

Does it sound like we may have a chance???

I do have another dozen hatching eggs on order for April 17th. Getting a mixed lot of MF's and silkies, found on craigslist so they will be local and we will pick up, not have them shipped. My girl has decided she wants to raise MF's and silkies, and has dh convinced to build her another pen so she can keep the breeds seperate. The seabrights will go to a good home, either SIL's or somewhere else. Or maybe they will stay here I don't really know.

I am pretty sure I am going to be a nervous wreck for a while. I am just so worried, I want this to go well for my daughter, she tries so hard to take good care of them. If even one of them hatches, I think she will be thrilled. But what if none of them hatch? She was so excited to get what she knew was a fresh egg Sunday night (well 2 of them) she went and made herself eggs for dinner, tiny though they were, I know they were the best eggs she ever had.

Tell me the eggs have a chance of hatching, and please let me know if I am missing anything important!!

You both can practice your candling skills. By day 10, you should know if some are developing or not. I am sure you have some viable fuzzies in there. Remind your daughter that Spring is just starting and if none candle well in days 10-14...then suggest that Spring is still here...more chances are in the nest already. GOOD LUCK!

Yes, we will keep trying until we get it right.

How do you all make it through the 21 days??

Plus, I work 3rd shift, so I am stuck up all night on the weekends with no-one to keep me company, and nothing much to do with my time but obssess over the little ones.

It's going to be a long 3 weeks. We will candle at 10 days. I'm afraid to do it any earlier. I can get a super bright halogen light from the lab, so I'm going to try that. Hoping a really bright light will help, plus the eggs are light brown to cream colored.

On an lg still air you should be taking the temp. from the top of the eggs (I just lay the probe on the eggs) and it should be at 101.5--It's better to be slightly low then to spike up so if you have to adjust do it when you can be home for most of the day, these darn lg's can be tricky. Good luck with your hatch, I'm hoping you'll be surprised (but not TOO surprised--chick food, brooder, heat lamp, etc....) and get a bunch of little fuzzy butts!

I do have the probe on top. I had the LG set up for 3 days before we moved the eggs, to let it stabilize. I work in a poorly funded research lab, I spend most of my days growing cultures in ancient ovens with broken thermostats, lol. So I should be used to tweaking temperatures.

I took a long digital thermometer from the lab that had been recently calibrated, and put it in one of the vent holes on top of the eggs, and found the temp matched the one on the thermo that came with the LG, so I think that the temp is correct. It seems to be holding pretty steady at about 100-101.

Seriously, I can't believe how crazy I am getting over this. I have a degree in biology, I should be able to hatch a few chicks, but somehow I think that experience is better than all the book learning in the world.

Oh, and we are well prepared for any fuzzy butts that come. Dh built a brooder, we bought plenty of chick food. I have lots of heat lamps and heat rocks from my days raising reptiles. So hopefully we will get a few, if not out of this bunch, then out of the eggs we are getting on the 17th!!

Good luck on your hatch I can't wait either and I'm obsessed with my eggs too. I put mine in last Tues hubby made me a neat candler and of course I've been looking at eggs every time I turn them and have veins and eyeballs. The official day for me to look at all of them is Tuesday and toss the clears. I cannot believe how much fun this is. This website is a wonderful place to learn from and get help enjoy

Sounds like you're good to go! I'll send good non-obsesive hatching vibes your way if you'll send some mine.

I also have my first attempt in using an lg still air and am making myself crazy too. The bator was an unexpected loaner and l only had a few days to research instead of my more usual few months so I'm being a little crazy over temps. etc. Wed. is day 10 for us so hopefully the kids and I will see good things when we try to candle.

OH, I hope it goes well for you. I have been pleasantly surprised at how stable the temp has been in my LG. I have to admit I didn't really research much

. Way back in Bio 101 we hatched some of the professors eggs, plus the lab would hatch out his eggs fairly regularly for the remainder of my years there, and I loved to help! I'm more worried about how old the eggs are, and how long they sat under the hens. I figure it took quite a while for 3 hens to lay a total of about 45 eggs.

Good vibes coming your way!

First unless your hens go broody it wont matter how many eggs are out there they will still lay.
Second I found like 2 dozen eggs hidden, half where frozen so far I have 8 left in the bator.I put each egg in bowl of room temp water and any eggs that sank where bad/old.They are due to hatch saturday.

Ha, you're not the only one - I am a former biology professor but a) boy is hatching eggs just the COOLEST thing in the world, it is just ASTOUNDING that they can go from two haploid cells to a fluffy self-regulating independant peepy chick in just three weeks!, b) I get very stressed out over incubation, and collect lots of data to try to figure out why things go wrong

, and c) I still SUCK at it, my fourth hatch has just culminated in only 2 of 11 fertile eggs hatching

(Current hypothesis: maybe the thermometer is off and I'm running too hot?)

Good luck, have fun, hang in there,

Pat, who never got this stressed about her own pregnancies, hatching eggs makes me MUCH more neurotic
