, is yours struggeling with diarrhea as well? Yes, along with a bit of a swollen belly and loss of appetite. She has developed egg yolk peritonitis and is barely a year old. I started with 9 babies last spring, and after this one is gone, I will be down to just the rooster and one hen from my original flock. I am wondering if I am cut out for chicken raising.I'm sorry, is yours struggeling with diarrhea as well?
I hate that they have such a short lifespan.

, so maybe heritage hens would be the way to go from now on. Maybe you just had some bad luck with your babies... Good luck with your flock!
I didnt know that, but now I do! Thanks for the Heritage info. But then, you have an increased chance of introducing viral ucky stuff to your flock.Mine had a swollen belly as well, so maybe she had egg yolk peritonitis as well....
One year old, that's bad luck! I'm looking some things up on the internet about chickens, I've learned that buying chickens in Murdochs etc (that's where mine come from) will give you a bad start to begin with. Best hens would be heritage hens, they live longer / healthier (not sure how to get them, but I'm going to look into that). My husband already wants me to stop raising chickens because I really can't handle losing them, so maybe heritage hens would be the way to go from now on.
