Worssst Prolapse! Emergency

@alinas2010 gave you excellent advice. Read the article. Carefully follow all the instructions in it.

Your patient's woes did likely start with the huge egg. Was it a double yolk by some chance? Rather than being a bonus, a jumbo egg doesn't do the hen who has to lay it any favors, though. It increases the likelihood of chronic egg binding and a high risk of death.

After this prolapse finally resolves, continue giving her one calcium tablet each day for the next two weeks. This can help to tame her ovulation to a single ovum if she's in the habit of double yolk eggs.

Poor baby can’t catch a break. I know it looks bad, and I imagine worse in person, but many do recover. Sometimes it takes a few days to a week or more and a lot of dedication. You’re the best judge of her condition. Things like witch hazel and cortisone cream can help with the swelling, so can honey.
I find this so reassuring, thank you. I am more than willing to put in the TLC where needed for her I just needed to know it was worth it for her too.

@azygous really will have the best recommendations on prolapses (especially in her article). Follow her advice closely and maybe she can weigh in on the contractions. I imagine it might feel like that tissue is “in the way”, maybe that would cause what you’re interpreting as contractions?

Prolapse is caused by straining to pass an obstruction. A hen will have contractions as her body's way of trying to move an obstruction. Calcium encourages these contractions and makes them stronger, enabling the hen to move the obstruction. Once the obstruction is expelled, the prolapse will retract and stay.
