Your local game warden can give you the local hunting and trapping laws for your area. In VT, unless a trap is on your own land, it must be tagged with the trapper's name, address, and phone number. Body hold traps over 8" are only to be used in the water, which I assume would be the same everywhere...but one should never assume.

I don't think I'll call about it,thanks for the info.bigzio,I will get a trap rule book.If one of my dogs dies from a trap,I'll call Wildlife & fisheries folks & get a lawyer!
When my MIL moved here 20 yrs ago, you wouldn't believe how many of her dogs were killed by hunters chasing them down & shooting the dogs by 4 wheeler, farmers poisoning meat to kill coyotes & killed her dogs...
I could go on & on....It's so sad. Yall the movie "Deliverance"? Kinda like that here if ya know what I mean, you can hear that banjo tune all over the place...

My dogs stay close to home thankfully & don't roam around like the other dogs.
Judy, I looked at that site & it's very similar to one that got my dog.. It had a trip line & coil spring. All I did was push down on that spring with all I had& got it loose enough to get Cat's head out of it. It was an old rusty trap,gosh knows how many poor animals died because it.
Cat-dog is doing good,but she's been staying real close to me when we go out. Poor dog...
I live a quite boring life & wanna keep it that way!!!

the other side to the dog problem is we all know what dogs can do to our chickens....

I grew up on a dairy farm, the dogs would start with a chicken, then move to the calves, then start chasing cows. I don't know of many well endowed ladies that can run "freestyle"... it causes major damage to a dairy cow. That's why farmers would shoot stray dogs.

Hunters would shoot them because they'd chase deer.

All of that said, it is absolutely irresponsible to leave a conibear trap in the open where it can kill anything that comes by. that type of behavior gives all sportsmen a bad name.

I think traps are terrible I don't care what kind of animal it is. It has to be horrible to be in such fear and can't get lose. Just my opinion but that is how I feel. It makes me cry to think of a animal in such terror. I am glad your fur kid is ok how awful I won't ramble on any longer.
