I wondered that myself. The only part I don't relish is making the die and having to stamp all of them. Someone suggested that putting them in the die would make them more rigid, and easier to overlap. So I am not sure if it's truly necessary, but I sure like the idea of using them flat instead.

Definitely the side hinge- that way no stress walking on it, or when the rain warps it a bit....it will still close better that way!

Instead of having a 4ft wide door, how about 2 - 2ft wide doors? Less weight on the hinges, you can secure the left door on the inside with barrel locks, open the right door from the outside which can be secured to the left with a pad lock. Also does not need as much room to swing open. Just my $.02.
