would a racoon climb a fence?

I watched coons run down the top of a privacy fence 5 ft. tall so yes they climb and play games on fences. used to think they were cute but now I catagorize them with rats, mice, coyotes, skunks,And all varmits 4 or 2 legged. They need to die if they mess with my flock, or my corn ,or my grass, or my dogs food ,or my bird feeder. O yeh they have robbed all that at my house in the city and my house in the country.

Yes, you need to put a coon proof latch on the pop door. The varmits figured out how to open my simple latch and so now I have a D-ring through it. It's a bit more of a pain, but better than a coop full of dead birds.

Once you are on a coons nightly rounds, you need to exterminate it. Trap and shoot.

I use D-rings on the run latch, the people door and the pop door. Cheap peace of mind!

I also agree about the coons! Like I said, they are like a teenager, as long as there is food, they will come!!!!

Evil ninja teenagers that drop from the trees and scale buildings!!!

>>I do have some chicken wire for the ventilation on the coop... that makes me a bit nervous<<

Chicken wire is totally useless where racoons are concerned. They can bite right through it or pull it apart. Replacing it with hardware cloth will insure that they cannot get to your chickens via the top of the coop.

A hot wire works well around the outside of pens. And they can climb fences with ease, especially if there are wooden posts.

Hope you get him before he gets your chickies.....

Yeah, I just haven't had the $ to get the hardware cloth for the ventilation.

Time to get a different way for the pop door as well... I hope I can rig something!

And they can climb alot highter than you think!! I have an 8 ft. fence around my outside pen and another 18 inches that is loose so that they couldn't have anything to use for support, but this is what you get when they want in bad enough!!

BUT I WAITED FOR HIM!!!!

I don't want to think that they got in since there was NO fence at all for the longest time. so why would they do this AFTER I put up a fence ya know? kind of weird... BUt that door was all messed up... perhaps I'll look for claw marks on the outside of the door.

They do it whenever they realize there is food inside.
