Hello, I have a black silkie roo that is coming of age. I want to put all the chickens together in the pen to see if they get along. Will a bantam roo stick to trying to mate with only bantams or would he try with the big girls? I keep the 3 big girls for their big eggs, don't want him to make them fertile. I have 2 silkie pullets that are still young, not laying yet (soon I hope), and they are not missing any feathers on their backs yet, so I don't think he's tried with them yet. Thanks..

A rooster will try to mate anything if its the top roo, or if there is an abundance of hens and he can sneak one over on the top roo.

Haveing said that, I doubt that a silkie could successfully mount a standard.

Having said that, if you intend to sell chicks or hatching eggs, then some would argue that it would not be ethical to have any other roosters around the breeding hens other than those of the same breed and variety.

Really? Wow, That must be something to see!

I figured he would just be too small and wouldn't bother. Thanks for the reply!!

Hello, I have no intention to breed or sell hatching eggs, They are all pets. My kids picked their favorites and I just want them to all get along (hopefully). He is the only roo..

It is funny to watch! It is even funnier that I have watched!!

I have checked and I do have fertile eggs. He is my only rooster, so I know its him! When I had a standard rooster he would see Nick on a hen and go jump on top of Nick! Now! That was funny to see!! Try explaining that to my nephews!!

We had a silkie roo. Buff Orpington & EE hens all laid eggs fertilized by our little guy. Took some practice, but he figured out how to do his deed. One day I watched him jump off the nest-box ramp and land on top of one! But he could nab them just as easily from the ground as well.

If there's a will there's a way. And banty roos are real big when it comes to WILL!

They'll mate with anyone they can get to...try picturing a tiny Mille Fluer d'Uccle roo on top of a HUGE Columbian Wyndotte.

Scary sight, by the way.

And Silkies have a habbit of being kind of pushy, anyway. Ours always starts the fights.

Wow... this is too funny, here I was under the impression that they would mate generally to the same breed and size. My girls are HUGE. Thats going to be some sight. I guess we will explain that they are giving piggy back rides huh??
