Would de in the food help in this situation?

I just picked up one of these and am having the same issue using a standard five gallon bucket. I really love the idea, so far it has kept out the rain, black ants and fire ants as well as wet chicken feet but the humidity is so high it will make a reverse cone like you describe when the bucket gets down to half.

Going to solve the problem by using a 4" pvc pipe + cap - then I can fill it from the outside of the coop too.

I have had experience buying food that a place doesn't normally carry

Most places around here get at least one delivery per week , so I just have to tell them before the day they place an order.

But, if you can't get the pellets, I guess it's time to figure out some baffles for the feeder

My husband actually picks up feed in his pickup for this place. They are too small to buy by the truckload so he drives to the feed company and picks up a pickup load at a time. They only buy Kent and they can get Nutrena but they don't buy Nutrena poultry feed so that would have to be a special order too. Pellets are regional for Nutrena so I don't even know if they could get them-I will check though. I have a terrible feeling this store won't be around long and we'll have to find another source (I used to work there so I know that they barely scrape by sometimes). There is another grain elevator not far away but they also only sell Kent brand feed. My only other choice here is layer mash which is ground and would be even harder to use with this feeder.

Wanted to update this. I bought a cheap bowl at walmart and cut the top down until it fit in the bucket (next time I'll check the dollar store instead-this bowl was a little tough to cut). I got a funnel that fit the bottom of the bowl. I cut the bottom out of the bowl, and the bottom of the funnel so that the opening was wider than the metal lever thing. I used foil tape to attach the funnel to the bowl (so the result was like a really large funnel with a 2" or so opening at the bottom), and then to attach the bowl/funnel to the bucket. The foil tape sticks like crazy! I filled it up and the lever part works fine so we'll see if we get the reverse cone again.
