Would it be a dumb idea to put a coop up next to a pourch and against the house?

A small 8x12 x3 foot high run containing a small coop with a hinged roof for cleaning and gathering eggs.
The top of the run would be removable a in few places and fitted down by hinges. Would have a 2 foot door at the side to rake bedding out.
It would be for 2 - 3 silkies.

Got the idea to help keep weed eating down around here...

For just a few silkies it should be fine:>) Now if you have 40 or so maybe you wouldn't like it so much, but your idea is fine!

I suppose it depends on how often you clean the coop and run and how much you like the smell of chicken poo.

Like Mahonri pointed out, it depends on how much you plan on cleaning the coop/run area. The chicken poo can be quite stinky, especially in warm weather and after a good rain.

If you don't have a problem with keeping things good and clean, it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Ya I plan to be able to just rake it out wagon it up and dump it off in the pile out back.
Shouldnt take more than 8 mins the way I see it.

This might sound dumb but you might also want to check how the rain comes off your roof to the area you want the coop, So your chickens don't get soaked when it rains.
