haha

for bedding I could use any kind of tree Ga has to offer.
My SO is a logger and they bought a chipper that chips a dump truck load in about 10 mins or less.
Right now I have just regular georgia pine trees that were aged a couple years

Ive been using it for my chicks and chickens and everyones fine..

So just tell me what kind of tree would be good and thats what Ill use

if you got GREAT airation going through those birds then that's more than likely why they're fine

they arent cramped in and breathign that in. In a garage i see that possibly being a prob tho. hardwoods would be good one that's not poisonous, i'd avoid pines...aspen isa pine but its less scented. Its someting about the Phenol oils. I dont knw which hardwoods are not poisonous though so no help htere. I wish I was lucky and had a logger to get dried shavings from! *jealous* HEHEH\\

I know apple trees are fine to use... cept who has a forest of apple trees they'er cutting down all the time so that's probably out...willow......

Well they will have a full sized window that I would open up during the summer cause It will get hot in there. Georgia heat is nothing to mess with..

Im wondering if it might get to hot for them in there?
I could put a fan in the window to move air

If you have a fan that blows out the window this would work well. It will circulate the air, blow the heat out, and help with any smell. It would be better if you had 2 windows across from each other, than you could have one blowing in and one out for a nice cross breeze. You could also have a vent put into you roof that would help with ventelation.

Maple, beech and I believe cherry are good hardwood for bedding. You could also get a paper shredder and shred your paper your going to throw away. Then use that as bedding, you could then dump it in a pile to compost like you would the shavings. I have made bedding out of shredded paper before for adult birds and it work well, plus your recycling. Just a thought.

quail like to dust bath and if you offer them some sand they will love you for it, but this may be why people say they are dusty? I have found mine are quite dusty, but it's only from the sand they bathe in.

how many where you planning on having? This will also determine how smelly and dirty they will be. Also how often you will need to clean them.

You could use bunny feeders and waters, this will keep down the loss of food and water, and keep them a little less messy.

I would love to see your set-up if you decide to do this, it sounds like a good idea. The best part is them being predator proof!

"...Or else it gets the hose again." Bwahahaha!

The only dust I really see is from food and dried out poo. I clean the cage constantly because it's in my kitchen, so it's not really an issue.

the brooder dust is the worst for me i really cant hang out by the brooder for long or my asthmatic lungs let me know about it. i think i read somewhere most of that dust is actually fine pieces of the feathers....(i think)

Youre probly right on the feather thing..
I think ive heard it too and it makes sense.
I always find little bits of feather around
