Would it be mean to....

If you don't have predators already, you will once you start letting chickens sit unprotected all night long. And once the predator finishes off the aged, do you think they'll just go away until another old one gets the boot?

The way I figure it, even when my girls are too old to be good layers, they'll still earn their keep by continuing to keep our property a 'bug free zone'. I swear they could eat their body weight in bugs if the bugs were available. I have 9 gals that I free feed and when the bugs are out, they hardly touch their feed! Eggs are great but the bug patrol is awesome!

I don't think there would be anything wrong with letting them free range during the day and cooping them at night. I don't think the OP meant dump them on the side of the road or throw them out with no food or water...

No,no,no Don't get me wrong, I would never stop feeding them or giving them shelter. I just thought my main coop with the run would be for eggs and breeding. I don't let my birds out to free range right now because they are pure and I don't want our free range birds (they moved over from a neighbors and we can't catch them, he has long since moved) breeding with them. I'm thinking a retirement coop so they can free range during the day and still coop them at night, if needed, I have a Blue heeler that is very good at protecting his birds.I would never just dump them like they are worthless. I would even have a hard time giving them to someone if I knew they were going to eat them but I do have this as an option, we have a guy up the road that ends up with alot of older birds and 4-H no longer wanted birds and he treats them very well until it's freezer time.
