Would this work for quail?

Since I took the picture we added 12" boards along the bottom of the shaded area. I was thinking I could just nail up the 1/4" garden mesh fencing I have in all of the open spots (sides of shaded area, windows, etc) and they could live on the dirt? (With some bedding, perching branches and vegetation added) I'm looking at getting 12 female A&M quail for eggs. Would my daughter be able to just go into the little door to collect eggs? Do quail lay eggs in designated nesting areas? *can you tell I have no idea what I'm doing?) My chickens had to go bye-bye because of the $&#%ing HOA, so I'm turning to quail instead. Any help would be much appreciated.

You would definitely want to make sure that there are no gaps that they could slip/fly out of. I know mine dig little holes all along the perimeter of their pen, so you might look at burying a wire apron to keep them from tunneling out. They will lay eggs everywhere, inside and out, so just make sure you can access all parts of the pen to gather them. You can try to encourage them to lay in designated areas by making little sheltered nests, but don't be surprised if they completely ignore them.

You will also want to make sure that you clean the coop out really well too, if you had chickens in there before. There are several diseases that quail can get from chickens that are very serious. Make sure you remove any bedding that was in there, and here's a link to a thread where I picked people's brains about how to sterilize a coop and run:

Also Just To Add To Kwartels Answer.... This 1/4 Inch Mesh Garden Fencing--- Is It Wire Mesh? If Not Do Not Use It. Use Wire Fencing As The Monofilament Plastic And Other Fishing Line Type Stuff Has No Protective Value Against Predators. And Quail Ring The Dinner Bell For Predators Very Very Loudly

make sure there are no holes or anything they would fly out off because our got out off the pen and we have seen it and got it once put it back in the pen and it got out they are good flyers so make sure they could not fly out of the pen

Thanks guys-- it's plastic fencing, and we're in a very urban HOA setting with 6' block walls and no predators at all so far (5 months with chicks and chickens, and a total of one alarm call & no attacks when the neighbor's scaredy cat looked into our yard for a minute) We have two mini schnauzers that keep everything out of our yard, but they can't get near the quail because of our garden fence.

Speaking of the flying-- I'm going to trim their wings when I get them just in case they get out-- I'm sure it's bound to happen, especially when 2 little girls want to help with the egg collecting. Hopefully our 4' garden fence keeps them in the immediate area if they do.

Texas A&Ms can not fly as good as bobwhite, so if one were to get loose it would be more apt to run from you than fly away.

We got Texas A&Ms (wanted Jumbos but beggers can't be choosers) and you're right-- 1 already got loose while I was transferring them into their new cage, and she just flew three feet away and froze-- I just walked over and picked her up.
