I'm not very handy (yet) but I hope to put an actual roof on it sometime this year.

If you can get 2 pallets to your house, lean them against each other to make the A, screw them together and put a tarp over it. You could also use a saw horse and secure a tarp over it. These are pretty easy ideas, if your bin idea fails or when your chicks get to big to use it.
