Would you cull a roo with this horrid poo?

His behavior is normal. very active, eats and drinks and forages and is hormonal as well!

He is 10 months old. gets DE in feed now and then. ACV in water daily. Is fed Poulin Grain's equivalent of Breeding Pellets.

His poop has always been a bit weird, but now, it looks quite bad.

he is in solitary right now. the alpha roo is taking his turn with the 18 girls.

Remember now, his behavior is TOTALLY NORMAL.

dilemma:

i want to use him as a breeder.

BUT he has often had weird poops. Not this bad though. Prior to this, he has always been a 'passer of blood' in some measure. Also poops more watery than the others.

Is this a sign that he doesn't belong in the breeding pen?

I am NOT doing antibiotics.

No vet either.

Maybe I should just cull him. This may be a sign of intestinal weakness or something.

Experts' advice would be much appreciated.

The last part of the HTML tag, [/IMG] ended up being part of the URL. Maybe you can edit it? Anyway I did cull one that did this, in addition to other unpleasant attributes. I swear he never did seem quite "right" somehow, like he could have been healthier.

Every chicken keeper manages their flock differently, and it's really not up to us to judge. Not everyone keeps them as pets. If JMC is trying to cultivate a strong, healthy flock then there is no place for weakness or illness. Personally, I would have done the same thing. I can't afford a $100+ vet bill for a $5 chicken. If OP doesn't have any other roosters of his own, I'm sure he'll be able to find one just as pretty as the last.

OP, I think you did the right thing. But I have to ask - did you process him? Just wondering. I don't know that I would eat a bird that was potentially ill. I know that whatever it was woudn't likely survive the cooking, and most chicken diseases aren't transmittable to humans... It's just one of those things for me.

I had a dog that had poo that looked like that... She had colitis. Do chickens get colitis? From the pic, something wasn't right. As a farmer...you have to do what you have to do to protect the 'herd'. Those that haven't grown up on or around farmers may not always understand what difficult decesions we have to make at times.

So true. You can't grow good stock to feed those who are offended that you'd cull one unless you cull.
