If it's a spray they are using and they are anywhere near close enough to you, the aerosol can drift on wind. If your neighbors are using something that can be eaten by bugs, the bugs can carry it to your land (and it will be more concentrate). If it was something poisonous in your own yard, you may be able to scout out the culprit and eliminate it.

The only poisonous plant is morning glory, and that's at the corn field, which they don't get to. I think the lady next door sprays Malathion, which is toxic. Our chickens are about 50 feet from there, but free range about 10 ft away from the garden. I'll find out what she uses.

I'm sorry for your troubles, but I do think you made the right decision for the bird, for yourself and for the safety of your other birds. The only thing I would have done differently is try to get the dept of ag to do a necropsy. (But your NC dept. of ag might not provide; I don't know?) The GA DofA does it for free. I certainly wouldn't have spent any more $$ on the bird.

I hope you can find peace knowing that you provided Spot a good home while he was here and you made the right decision when it was time.

Yeah, definitely if they are ranging that close to a toxin that is being sprayed, there could be some issues there. Add on to that that the bugs don't have to make it very far from having eaten the plant bits before the chickens might be eating them too. Ten feet is also close enough for a slow toxin to kill the bugs while on your property after being poisoned on hers

Hope you can get it worked out and that this doesn't happen again.

We'll just stop free ranging. I wish she'd just use the insect soap, I hate toxic stuff so close

A privacy fence wouldn't fix bugs either.
