Would you give them away?

We are hoping to move 2000 miles away next year, I may end up giving away or selling all my chickens rather than put them through a grueling trip. I've sold cockerels this year at the poultry swap.

I have given away a few.to a friend I know will take as good care of them as I would. Not giving to anyone who is going to kill or eat them. Love all my babies.

I had to rehome my 2 aggressive hens that were cruel to my sweet Buffed Brahma. But that was the ONLY time, except for the extra cockerels. I am very attached to my flock. Each chicken has its own name and personality. They are a part of our family. No way José would I give them away!

Around here chickens would never be given away. If they don't become part of the free range flock they become part of the freezer flock.

Mine are pets, my intent is to keep them all their natural lives. If unforeseen circumstances come up, certainly I would try to find them a good home as pets, first. One never really knows what one will do, until you're forced to do it.

My answer is going to have to be “it depends”. Sometimes situations happen where I may need to rehome someone.

We gave the mean cockerel away.

Honestly, for me to rehome a hen it would have to be what is best for her or the rest of our flock as a whole. If one was being picked on to the point of death, I would certainly find her a home where she could lead a happy life before letting her suffer every day. Or if I had an extreme bully that couldn’t be persuaded to be nice no matter how much training.

Aside from that I can’t see myself parting with any of our girls. They are my little buddies Every time I go out and walk around when they are free ranging they follow me in a little chicken train. Gotta love having company doing chores!

I hatch, therefore some must go, I will sell or give away cockerels, even old birds IF I think they are going to a good home as pets.
