Wound healed but infection remains--next step?

Successfully removed a long thorn from a hen's foot last weekend after soaking in Epsom salts. Soaked, flushed, antibiotic ointment, dressing. Soaked foot every day for three days just to make sure got all of it, Epsom salts. Re-applied antibiotic ointment and dressing. Skin has healed beautifully but residual swelling and heat in leg tells me she's got an infection. I went with .25ml of injectable Penicillin G tonight. Was that the right thing to do? TIA.

Not until tomorrow night. :/ It's too late now and I won't see them once it's light in the morning, unfortunately. Her leg is swollen on the footpad, but not really up the leg, which is why I don't think I really noticed it before. I was so focused on the little wound itself. And I was soaking her foot in warm water, so I probably didn't feel the heat coming off of it before. *sigh* It's kind of hard to see the swelling. I had to keep moving around for my husband to even notice it, but he could feel how one foot pad was noticeably warmer than the other.
