Less than a week old and the chicks can just fly across their brooder. They seemed to have picked up loads of energy in a matter of hours yesterday. Is this typical? Does it slow down eventually?

They really really do not like being held. I keep seeing pics of people holding their chicksn in the palm of their hand and taking a photo. Mine would never stay in my hand if I held it with the palm open like I see in these pics. It's even really hard to catch them because they avoid any hands like the plague. And when you do pick them up, they're chirping up a storm and struggling constantly.

Some chickens seem to be more laid-back than others. They will get more used to being handled, as long as you handle them. And then there will be some that will never like being handled. My white Leghorn is my flighty one. It takes 2-3 people to catch her, but she always comes running when we walk out there anyway.

The energy won't slow down...at least not for a long time.

I would get some yogurt mixed with their crumble feed and put it on my finger. I you can get them interested in treats they will relax a bit. They have to learn that your the one feeding them, not the one trying to eat them. Good Luck

I don't have any grit yet. Can I still give them yogurt? I do have some plain yogurt I'd love to try out on them.

Yep you can give them yogurt without grit. They only need grit to digest stuff they need to break up, like greens, veggies & fruits.
