wow, feeling over-whelmed before I even start, ? re. air-exchange.

when my babies were 2 days old i went outside and got a small dish of dirt and gravel. i nuked it for 2 minutes to kill any bacteria. it was only a matter of days before they outgrew the small dish. about 3 days ago i filled a shallow horse feeding bowl (you could use a rubbermaid or cat litter pan) with dirt and leaves. they have been great, it gives them something to do, they get grit. remember living animals are not sterile, nor are they meant to live in a sterile environment. i vote start with a small dish of nuked, cooled sand/dirt and move them up.

Thanks to all of you, I appreciate you taking the time to answer. I am feeling calmer and I am not going to read any more info right now, except for your checklist article TC, LOL!

Some of the articles written about chickens have to do with commercial operations using conditions that are nothing like what you are doing. They are often written in publications that would give you a better idea of their context and target audience, but then later are copied onto an internet web site. It can be really confusing, especially when you are new and just starting out.

Enjoy your chicks and have a great time!

I know how you feel about getting informational over-load. When we got our 1st 2 adult chickens a few months ago I found this website, and was just scared, I wanted to return them. I was reading WAAAY too much stuff, esp bad stuff like that I had no clue about like lice, mites, mareks, etc! Finally just had to convince myself it will be ok! Now I have chicks!

Thats funny, yes I am also worried about mites, lice, Mareks and a host of other things, LOL! Guess I will learn more as I go. : )
