Even though I am in my early twenties, with my level of forgetfulness, you'd think I was starting to experience mild dementia. I am so forgetful, but usually it is pretty benign, like, forgetting the shopping list. I am usually in a hurry, so I just forget to grab things sometimes.
Well, today I had a big OOPS. I was at Tractor Supply buying dog food, and as I was checking out, was chatting with the cashier. Everything was scanned, and bagged up. But somewhere in the mix, I forgot to pay. I did not notice it until I got home and was unpacking the groceries and everything. I didn't have a receipt for my TSC purchase. I began picking my brain, and came to the horrible realization that I was pretty darn sure I did not pay. Since I would have used my credit card, to avoid carrying cash, I instantly checked. The groceries showed up on the online statement, but NOT TSC. Oh no!
Needless to say, everything I got at TSC went back into the bag and was loaded up into the car as I headed out to the store. When I got there (about an hour or two after I was there initially), there had been a shift change. So I explained my predicament to a really nice woman who knows I am there often. She gave the manager a quick call to come and help, and he began checking through the computer logs and stuff.
Guess what? I really did not pay! I wasn't going crazy after all. And of course, I am definitely embarrassed about it. The manager was actually the person who worked the cashier the first time I was at TSC. It was a first for him and he was embarrassed too, but was very thankful that I came back and solved everything! My goods were rescanned and this time, I paid! Problem solved, integrity restored! I am just glad I noticed it so soon, 'cause that would mean I stole that stuff if I didn't!
On an interesting note, a gentleman in the store, who was purchasing something while all this was being figured out, told me that I must definitely be a Christian woman to have the integrity I showed. I didn't want to lie, so I told him that truthfully, I was an atheist. He was very surprised, but not in a bad way I think!
