Wrath's Marans

@wrathsfarm I’ve got a question that’s maran related ish. So my maran mix rooster, Fred, he’s a year old. And circumstances being what they were, he stayed indoors for A LOT longer than he should have..blah blah blah..
Anyway here recently since it’s been cold, 12 degrees at night, and Fred crows and crows until I finally give up and bring him back in. Once he’s inside he snuggles down and sleeps. It’s odd though because I’ve got coop heaters in the coop and it’s 42 degrees in there. My other chickens are perfectly fine. There’s no fighting or bullying going on either. I’ve got cameras in the coop, and he just stands up on his roost and crows, until I go get him. Actually he follows me into the house, he climbs the porch stairs just as pretty as you please, pecks at the door until I open it for him. Is this odd behavior a Maran thing? Or does Fred have “special” needs? Surly it’s not possible to spoil a rooster…right?!
The camera in your coop might be what is causing the crowing. If I turn on my coop camera after dark even on night mode the IR LED light on the camera is enough to wake up my rooster. He senses the light and starts waking up the girls. If I don’t turn on the camera he sleeps trough the night without a peep.

Hm well I can try to cover it up or something, I mainly need the cameras for the sound. I’ll try anything at this point. He’s such a good boy, I just want him to be content AND keep my sanity 🙂

Thanks...

Fred's the smart one 🤣
I think it might be more of one rooster can't make the other back down or submit so it's basically a fight to the death thru fence.

I'm more pro-active when it comes to my boys than others. But my reasoning is King's neurological issue now with unbalance, Kong would surely kill him even with a 1/2 a spur. So I'm very caution to keep him safe to live his days out here.
My wife just suggested last night as a matter of fact of building a retirement coop for him and some of the older hens I don't use for breeding.
So that's in the plan.... I can then move one of the breeders in to fill mixed eggs for hatching the younger ones.
That IS the most sweetest thing!
I’m not surprised or anything but, I’m sooo glad you care enough to do that. It’s no rocking chair..but acceptable 😄

My latest Marans hatch. I haven't had any eggs looking like that. Any ideas yet

Idea on gender? Look way too young yet.
Try to get some pics without the red light.

Are they all Marans? 4th little one from left with the mostly white face looks like a mix. Hard to tell tho, I could be wrong.

More pics please...♥️
