Wrath's Marans

I have never heard a specific number of grams or ounces just when it is in the normal size range for the breed. One issue I have heard with breeding from pullets is you don’t have any information on the long term health of the bird your breeding. Like if you only hatch from pullets then a couple years from now you discover that your birds all have been issues getting egg bound and prolapsing at two years old or they all have hip issues when the get older these can be a very hard problem to correct after you have been breeding from them the whole time.

I’m not saying don’t try it but don’t invest everything into the young pullets just because you think they are an improvement over the older birds in the flock.
That's not why I asked, I have mature hens but would like to start hatching from my Wheaten Marans pullets also. Thank you for breaking that all down.

I supposed I need to wait a little longer then🤦‍♀️ I have zero patience 😂
Oh I know. I want to hatch little Purple bands eggs but they're pretty small still. But she's my darkest pullet eggs. I want more!!
I got one last week from her that was the darkest I've seen from her. Set it down to grab my phone, next thing I know the Marans are causing chaos going after the yoke on garage floor. Ugh...

I need to get better Marans I have 2 that are almost 2 years old the best layer (Penny) gives me 2-3 eggs a week that are pullet sized. The outer one(Betty) very rarely lays at all she might give 2 eggs one week then nothing for 2 weeks before laying another one. Her eggs aren’t even very dark.
I forgot to attach the picture of Penny’s egg

Did you check their bellies to see if they are overweight?

As a dual purpose breed they tend to put on weight after their second year and if, just to give an example, they are being kept in a run with feed available at all times, they get too fat which leads to fewer and smaller eggs.

In case they get scratch, sprout it, best for them is sprouted barley. Up their carrot/vegetable intake and have them work for their feed.

The color is good but 44 grams is not anywhere near breed standard. She was hatched June of 2023 so she is 1 year and 9 months old. She should be in her prime but she has never really produced well.
Yes that is low. Little purple band is 6 months @ 49g.
I don't actively keep track of they're egg weights. But they seem to be in the right viscinity.

Just took a few more for curious.
Jett is an OG at 4. Black and Copper are F1s.
