Wrath's Marans

I guess with the balance I mean, for example, with Brahmas, you breed for the biggest weights possible and smallest combs. Leghorns are slender with long tails and big combs. So it gets to a point where you can’t go further and so you get consistency.
Marans have medium combs, medium-small tails, they are medium size (relative to Brahmas and Orpingtons). You have to pick the perfect birds to breed to balance out these traits, you can’t keeps breeding in one direction or the features become too extreme.

If that makes any sense. I’m probably not selling them if you don’t want hard work!
Actually it sounds fun. Kind of like trying to make the perfect chocolate chip cookie.
I’m not afraid of hard work, if I was I wouldn’t have gotten chickens. (I’m not saying chicken keeping is just as hard as breeding to SOP, I’m just saying chickens in general aren’t easy. No chickens are easy it’s the upkeep that’ll kill ya, unless you have a broody or egg bound hen. Well I think it’s clear I’m not sure what I’m saying lol).

I’d say they are not ornamental because they are a utility breed before a show breed. Polish and silkies are show, they don’t have much utility. Marans can be meat birds, layers, broodies, diggers, so ornamental doesn’t quite do them justice.
That being said, I’m sure they’re perfectly chuffed to sit pretty in a clean coop.
Can confirm polish chickens especially bantams are just for looking at. They’re hysterical little birds, and very pretty but not good for anything else.

My Polish bantam cock (his hatch mates died) lives with my big mixed layers flock and somehow is 2nd in command of 5 boys, all at least three times his size. He chases the subordinates around and is always running around in circles.

I keep him just because he’s funny to watch and pretty to look at.

Ohhh he’s a beaut! Does he have a name? And I see a red hen behind him, what’s she?
Out of 5 roosters, my primary is a bantam Cochin. The other boys are huge compared to him. They’re standard sized. One of which in almost 13 lbs. My little Cochin has a big attitude apparently, the other boys are scared of him. It’s so funny to watch this tiny chicken chase the behemoths around. I think every flock/flocks needs at least a few looking at chickens!

Slash (G’n’R’s guitarist). I also had Angus, Jimmy, James and Brian, all old school rockers because of their hair!

The red hen is just a red sex link, a lohmann brown most likely. Good layers but not pure bred.

Dude! I’ve got a slash and axel bantam polish chickens! (My axel is actually a girl lol). And my other 2 are Cher and Tina- because of the hair!
I’ve got 4 RSLs, and they are the best chickens! No technically not a breed, buuut the best layers, friendly, docile and 2 of mine go broody all the time, they make the best mamas! I would recommend RSLs to anyone especially first time chicken owners.

I’ve never known them go broody, that’s very interesting.
James and Slash were my boys, Angus, Jimmy and Brian were pullets. Angus was shorter than the others!
