Wrath's Marans

I tried to get more Ermines coming, but my breeder shut the pen down. I think she wants to increase her Marans numbers.

Can't blame her for that wise move!!
You are extremely Marans biased. Ermines are gorgeous chickens, that lay few eggs and have long lists of creative ways to die :barnie

And that's why Marans are inferior to all others.

My line generally does... this pic is old but this Angel's first 18 eggs. All dated left to right, back to front. She started out all wonky, 4th egg a double yolk. By the second week she was getting consistent. View attachment 4279995

A few more visuals...

One of her first this year after break. Pic is shadowed a bit. True color is a little lighter. A decent 6.

A Rebel pullet I kept to follow. Mom doesn't lay a dark egg, a pretty consistent 4, so expectation wasn't high on this one. But I've never hatched from her so here we are. She is surprising me with all these speckles tho, in her first 14 eggs and she's turning out to be a beautiful girl. Makes me want to hatch more from her Mom.

I also agree with second year in some are darker than the first year. Lil Jessie is one that I took notice of this year when she started back up.

As a general rule, with Marans we want to follow the first 20 eggs to achieve they're true color average they will lay. I tend to keep following to 30 eggs just for funsies, and continue to follow/stalk all my hens.
@Chooks man taught me years ago...we must know our hens and what shape, size, and color average each lays. This has rung true as having close to 20 girls now when I grab an egg, I can typically know exactly who layed it without having to stalk nest boxes now.....

as much.

Angel's eggs...named after your Dark Angel hen a couple years ago.
Thank you, my friend. A lot to learn still but I value your committed insight and willingness to share your knowledge.
Truly thankful to have you along with everyone who's helped me in this Marans journey.

You guys will know better, because the UK Arucana standard is very different to the American one, but how do you rank his tail? Looks very long and full, you don’t see that very often in a tail this low.
I noticed that also. I don't know the standard so had to look, @2ndTink may know more. I actually like his tail but it seems low for the Standard below. Reminds me of Poppy's and Monstrosity Blue's tail.

Tried to pick the pics that he seemed more relaxed. The other pics he was holding his tailset a bit higher, a little more alert because I was standing there maybe.

I’d say a tiny bit low too long given that standard. Still, I quite like it. Do you have another boy the same breed, or are you just keeping hens for egg colour?
