Writing goals

Or just plain tell us a bit about yourself. šŸ˜…
Yeah, not sure why I was beating around the bush there. I’m a writer of sci-fi/fantasy (surprise, surprise). My current novel is 15,000 words so far. For Novel November/naNoWriMo/whatever-it’s-called-this-week I wrote 10,000 words. So right now I don’t have an active writing goal, since I just finished my big one.

Do you wanna see??
A’ight

Oh yay, like me! Except for I have like six books goin' on in my head of the same storyline and I don't know whether or not to write the first, work on the third, or outline the sixth

My problem is my characters just do their own thing
And they’re really good at it

I tried to outline and plan a chapter and there was this one character who was MEANT to be a senior warrior who had since retired to training the young adolescent lads

But he did his thing and now he’s still in active duty? the third highest in their military structure and he was apparently a good friend to another main characters dead dad? And he’s the one that killed the dad? And now he’s going secretly AWoL?

I stopped outlining after that
It's always so insane to me how characters will just do their own thing if you let them! Clearly, your guy got a big bump in interest level. 🤯
I've never heard of Scrivener before, but that looks pretty cool. That's too bad it's not quite working for you though.
It's so unnecessarily complicated to use (meaning @notabitail would probably love it), but it's a lifetime license and I can export my stuff onto Kindle.

Meanwhile, this outliner over here...

I can't write anything without knowing where I'm going, otherwise it'll come out terrible, go miles in the wrong direction and drop off a dead end road and land in some unknown pond somewhere. I need to outline.

But then, when I'm not writing... I'm pretty good at freestyle. Stories still cooped up in my brain can go wherever they want because they don't ever have to end. They can go on forever if they want. Or I can just abandon them like they never existed without crying over losing storage space. :P
How detailed do you make your outlines? It's something I want to get better at, but I feel like that means I'll need to have my entire story sorted out. This does seem to be the conventional advice though.

I also did a sci-fi for nanowrimo last year! And congrats on the 15K, that's a huge milestone! :highfive:
