Wry Neck - Confused about treatment

Hi Debbie,

It's Ara. I'm so sorry she is still having such a hard time !!! Poor baby !! I remember when spike had wry neck his crop would not process the food also. Once his crop was empty I started giving him scrambled eggs with water only, and they seemed to always be gone by the next morning. He would only eat little amounts at first, with more frequent feedings. I just let him say when he was done. He would not eat out of the bowl at first, only from my hand for some reason. After a while he started eating out of the bowl , by himself. Not sure what she is eating now but they were the only thing I fed him for about 4-5 days. Then I started mixing in Tiny amounts of chick starter and water with the eggs. I was scared he would be eating eggs for EVER ...and never be able to digest his real food, but now he is back on chick starter and no eggs. Anyhow Just wanted to share that with you I hope the ACV works to clear her up!! That stuff does work miracles...I use it on everything. ACV is AMAZING for internal use...regular White Vinegar I use for cleaning, but never for eating !!

Well I gave her some acv today with water- she wasn't happy & gave me that look like where is my FOOD!! Lol.. Ill do this for a few days and see how she goes. What worries me is when I do feed her food, I'm worried she will scoff it too fast & we will be back to square 1... I think ill have to do what you suggested Lorri by only giving a little- but I hope I can control how fast she eats it wish me luck

Mix the ACV with water don't give it to her straight.. Its OK if she scarfs the food down, like I said she is going to act as though she is starving. Our main object is to keep her system working. It's been to long now for her to start shutting down, she should be laying eggs. LOL... And when your ready to give her food, she will scarf it down but it will be small amounts which is what we want as long as she continues to empty. Dont want the food to just sit in her crop then will have another issue..

My guess is when you put your hand underneath her to touch her chest, she probably feels like nothing but bones. If so we have a LONG way to go to get her to gain some weight back.. Apparently she is NOT one to be rushed, well except for eating food. LOL... Yeh then she shows signs of life right?? Crazy chicken.

Don't worry about watery poop, the only time her poop is NOT goining to be watery is when you give her food. Food solids it up, water and ACV will only flush her out. So Exspect watery poop, lets see if we can get that crop to empty. COME ON GIRL, you can do it... We aren't giving up on her yet.

So no worries, just work on that crop. Also smell her breath make sure we don't have any bad odors coming from it.

Thanks Lori, yes I mixed with water.. And no smelly odour coming from her breath. She actually emptied her crop this morning so that's great!!! Ill continue the water & ACV today as well. And boy you got that right how she won't rush getting better. I'm starting to think she just like being babied and hand feed. Sleeping in warm headquarters and being out in the sunshine Lol.. I'm just about ready to wean her off the prednisone as I only have 2 pills left now.. She isn't in a hurry to get back with her flock...
She is Boney underneath but no where near as bad as she was.. I know she needs to gain weight and I know she is full of spirit lol.. She's not giving up any time soon..
Can you believe it's been 12 WEEKS now!!!! Wow maybe I'm keeping her too comfortable lol..

What a pretty partridge. That's good that she empty, go ahead and start feeding her small amounts of food, you don't want her to go to long without, got to keep trying to get some weight on her. So as soon as she is able to control the draining of that crop get her some food. The sooner the better just go smaller amounts.. She will act like she's starving. LOL

2 MONTHS, WOW and she's still going. LOL.. Sounds like the prednisone started to work but then quit. HUM, I would go back to trying the baby asprin see if that helps any.. I wonder if the predisone could be a cause as to why she's brining up the food. Maybe it takes a full day for her to digest it? Maybe it's not melting or disinagrating faster enough for her system.. After all she is slow..LOL.. How are you giving her it? do you smash it up or just putting the entire pill down her?

I know the baby aspirin just melts as soon as it touchs water.

By now, I"m sure she is enjoying all this attention.. I'm sure she is loving life as it stands. LOL well she won't like you for a few days if you give her little bits of food at a time exspecially knowning she likes to GORGE.. LOL

Hi Lori- I'm going back to the liquid diet
After her feed today and some time in the sun preening- she frothed at the beak AGAIN!! I saw it happen this time. Poor pet.. What am I doing wrong?? She has only been given small amounts of food each feed. I gave her the acv with water for 2 days. Then I gave her yogurt with her food and halved the amount. I made her eat slower and 1 hour later up it came why why why????????
I feel hopeless. I've been at this for 3 months now- her crop has been emptying each morning and by night time it is full.. She is on her last day of prednisone tomorrow then I start weaning her off.
Once she is off the prednisone ill give her some aspirin.. She is making small improvements but then she oes backwards with a different issue ( vomiting)
I've just boiled some eggs and will feed her the liquid diet as of tomorrow ... At advise is appreciated..

I am not an expert but I was reading a vet post on Facebook that said bewcastles disease can cause wry neck? It made me think of you 2 and all your troubles and wondered if that might be something. I don't know that it is a different treatment however so might be a moot point.

Is she pooping? Sounds like she's not digesting her food crap!!!!!!!!! Start the liquid diet and don't give any food try it for a couple of days..make sure she's pooping.. Your not doing anything wrong its just been a long time and sounds like she is slowing down more then ever. Maybe the presondone is causing her not to keep her food down maybe she having a allergic reaction or maybe its giving her an upset stomach. don't give her anymore, just do the liquid diet for a couple of days with nothing else. See if that helps.
