Wry neck with neurotic behavior?

I hatched 24 chicks of mixed breeds and they are now 5 weeks old. I moved them to a large 4 x 6 brooder/ enclosure in my little barn at 4 weeks and every one was doing great. I noticed after a few days that one, looks like a RIR mix, was standing up but it's head was between it's legs. It tried to walk but would do actual flips and then get back to its feet. I had a chick with wry neck once so I thought that was most likely the issue. I brought the chick inside and it's been in for about 4 days. The issue seems slightly better but the behavior seems really odd. I think it is a pullet and she is still standing, backing in to the corner and tucking her head under her to her rear to sleep. She eats and drinks normally but then resumes this odd behavior with her head and also seems to hallucinate. She pecks at her underside like she has mites or something but she doesn't and she looks around her at the ground like she see's things. She also just jumps and flips all over the place at random inside the enclosure. I can rub her feathers and she seems to enjoy it but I have been stumped by her behavior. I've been dosing her with vitamins and of course keeping an eye on her. I am going to keep trying as long as she is eating and drinking but has anyone seen this crazy behavior before?

Hi. I've personally had to nurse 3 cases of wry neck back to health. it takes about a full month. I followed the direction of a site called Brown egg blue egg .com. Go to the index on the site and press wry neck. I think the site might say crook neck, but it's the same thing. I followed the treatment plan to a Tee. IT WORKS! I was able to bring 3 different birds back. You will need PATIENCE! Treatment takes a full month (aprox). Start treatment A.S.A.P. All my cases were severe. Birds doing flips. not able to walk only backward,unable to lift head.They could not eat or drink on their own.I had to hold the bird and bring food up to her mouth.(I often gave scrambled eggs. Then hold the bird and bring water up to their mouths. when you look online at the treatment you will notice he uses prednisone.You CAN do a successful treatment by following his plan and NOT using the prednisone. In all three of my cases I must say I DID use the prednisone. But it's a personal choice and can be hard on the bird being a steroid.I had luckily had some left over from my RX. DO NOT feel it's necessary to be successful with the treatment.Follow everything else to a tee. Wry neck is very difficult to watch but CAN be cured!I hope this helps. Remember for EXACTLY dose and what you need and treatment go to brown egg blue egg.com. On that sight he SPECIFICALLY talks about Silkies but the treatment applies to ALL BIRDS (chickens).Its just Silkies get wry neck more often than other birds. His treatment plan DOES WORK. it successfully cured 3 of my birds!!DO NOT get discouraged!treatment DOES take time. in ALL of my cases a good month.I do hope this is helpful. This treatment plan DOES work. Remember to have patience. in the beginning of treatment you might need to help your bird eat and drink.but they get better with treatment and WILL be able to eat for themselves later. I am giving 1/3 cc Poultry Cell 2-3 times a day, Purina Medicated started, she won't eat scrambled eggs oddly enough.

I would make sure the Poultry Cell has a good source of vitamin E and selenium.
All the links I provided, suggest E and Selenium. Tilly's Nest gives a good list of Vit. E products.
If she will eat her chick starter that is best

I found that all my chickens, both babies and older love it wet as well.

I'd cut out the medicated feed and switch to an all flock or normal non medicated formula. The medication to help prevent cocci (typically amprollium) is a thiamin blocker, it essentially starves out the cocci. Vitamin deficiency is one of the main causes of wry neck, so if she can get the proper nutrients from her feed, it would probably help her a lot.

I have the same issue. My suspicion is lead poisoning I am bringing her to the vet on the 31st which is awhile away, but I am watching her closely and have her isolated from the others. I will get blood work done and let you know.

Also, if the feed is older, by mill date, some of the vitamins won't be full strength any more. i had a chick years ago with this problem, and the necropsy showed multiple brain lesions secondary to vitamin E deficiency. She would not have recovered, and was the only chick out of about fifty with the problem. She probably had a higher than normal need for that vitamin.
It was the last time I failed to check the mill date on each bag of feed!!! Recently I've seen feed dated Sept.2020 available at the local feed store for chicks, and I'd hate to be feeding that!
I hope your little chick can recover, and do check the mill date on each bag of feed you buy. Plan to use feed within two months of the mill date, regardless of what the store staff tells you.
