I have a 3 month old Cochin frizzle bantam cockerel. Today my husband and I noticed he has wry neck. We had to research his symptoms to figure out what is wrong with him. We read that a Vitamin E and Selenium deficiency could be the cause for this. We honestly do not know if it was caused by an injury or deficiency. Does anyone have any advice for us to best help him recover? We are very new to chickens and we don’t want to worsen his condition.

We have other chickens and he is the only one like this.

I had a wry neck chick a few months ago, we seperated him to reduce stress and fed him the insides of sunflower seeds for vitamin E. He recovered after 1-2 weeks.
Afterwards, whenever he got stressed, his head would tip a little to the side, but not enough to bother him, we just made sure he ate a few sunflower seeds everyday.
Good luck with your frizzle!

Thank you so much for the advice! We will try this. I’m so worried about him.
How far is his head tipping? If it is tipped back to far you might need to gently push it back up every once in a while so he can eat and drink. It might take a week or two for him to recover.
Wishing all goes well:fl

Look these up, it might help.

Do you have any Poultry Nutri-Drench? If you do, then I would give the chick 2-3 drops twice a day.

You can also give 200 IU Vitamin E daily along with 1/4 tablet B-Complex.
Give her a little egg that contains enough Selenium. I would not give direct Selenium since too much can be toxic.

You can give poly-vi-sol without iron for wry neck, or brewers yeast, or poultry booster, or vit e capsule (squeeze it into the mouth after poking a hole in the capsule)...

His head is tipping all the way to the side when when he looks up. However, when he walks it is mostly straight. We looked in on him tonight and saw that he was nestled on the ground and not on his usual roosting spot. We put him in the coop. He walks around just fine and has been eating and drinking.

I would give vitamin E 400 IU daily, a small bit of egg, tuna or sunflower hearts daily for selenium. But some types of wry neck require B1 thiamine, so a daily chick vitamin in the water plus the E would be good. But B1 thiamine is also found in tuna and salmon, sunflower seed, almonds and others.
