This silkie had a slight crook to her neck yesterday when I took her off the nest (of course she's broody), it's more pronounced now as you can see. I've separated her and given her approx 3ml in vitamin b and c and put the vitamins in her water as well. I also gave her a multi vitamin directly in her beak which is super concentrated. I've added a picture (it's in Dutch, sorry), would this work or do I need the human variety?

I'm 99% sure it's not a vitamin deficiency because they get high quality pellet feed with added vitamins. Other than her neck, she looks fine, not dirty, thin or cloudy eyes. The other silkies (and brahmas) are also absolutely fine.

What do you think? Wry neck due to brain damage (her being a silkie) or something else? What else can I do for her other than separating and giving her extra vitamins? I'm in the Netherlands so things like rooster booster aren't available here.

First video is how I found her under the coop after removing her from the best this morning. Second video is her in her own cage, seemingly acting relatively normal.

Hi,

That looks like a form of wry neck. It gets other names too, stargazing is one. It's usually curable and I've had a few that were, or we can eliminate most of the issue so they lead normal lives.

Ours also get high-quality feed, plus added vitamins/minerals, and every so often, I'll see one looking a bit off, too.

For the B you're giving her, is that a B-Complex? That would be best as there's a couple of B's in that, that can help. Here we have human pills and cherry-flavored liquid. She would get 1/2 a pill or 1/2 an eyedropper per day of the liquid, which equates out to half of the human dose in case what you have is different than ours. (I can go read my bottles if you need.)

400 iu/lb of E per day should also help. If you can get gel caps of E that are around that strength, you can just pop one in her mouth. Follow up with some scrambled eggs each time as that has the selenium in those that will help the E absorb.

I'd do both of these for around two weeks. You may see improvement in a couple of days, but keep going. After two weeks, stop and see how she does without anything added. She should be much improved.

Thank you!

Yes, it's a B complex. Bought it a while ago for a hen with neurological issues, it's specifically for poultry and has to be dosed by the kg.

I'll get those liquid vitamin E capsules for her. Is that better than the multivitamin I gave? See the attached picture. She's already happily eating some boiled and mashed egg, is scrambled better?

Should I still keep her seperate? It'll break her broodiness in one go do that's a plus, but when she's no longer broody? I'm thinking yes, seeing as she has to go up a ramp for the coop and I'm afraid she might fall off.

Thanks again!

Wry neck isn't generally contagous unless she'd had some other illness that caused it. So, whenever you wanted, she could go with the rest of them.

Oh that's the vitamin you posted. I thought it was their feed so I sort of ignored it. I don't read German, but what I can decipher is that there is a very sufficient amount of Vitamin E in it, but I can't be absolutely sure.

What I'd do, to be on the safe side, is discontinue the vitamin additive during this trial period and just do the B-Complex and E (and yes, any form of egg is okay.) I'd be afraid of OD'ing her on E otherwise.

Is there some way to see if she has another illness that might've caused the wry neck? She seems fine other than the neck.

I'll get the capsules for humans then, the 400ug ones you mentioned.

Thanks so much!

You're very welcome. And no, if she nor they have any other symptoms of anything, I wouldn't worry. I just can't make a blanket statement that she's not contagious, even though I'm sure she's not.
