I am looking into buying some hatching eggs sometime soon probably this month but maybe next month. Here is a list of breeds i was thinking of getting.
1. I know i want some rhode island reds just for dependable laying
2. Barred rock
3. Black Australorp
4. Light sussex or Delaware ( i dont know the difference )
5. Maybe Buff orpington ( i dont know how good of a layer they are )

Any other breeds that are dual purpose let me know. I am probably wanting to buy around 30 eggs of different breeds. My main concern is the price. I am NOT looking for any show quality birds. I do want purebreds. I am looking for birds that i will hatch and use the hens for egg laying and butcher any excess roos. I really dont want to pay a lot for them and the cheapest i have found was on ebay. I can buy a dozen rhode island red for .99 cents but shipping is 14$... I would really rather support the people on BYC rather than Ebay. So post if you have any of the breeds i listed or any other breeds you think would fit my description.

I guess i should have posted that in the Want to buy section.

SORRY!!!

I think wyandottes are a dual purpose bird as well.
I had 1 buff orp and she layed well, but mine was kind of skinny and small, but that was just that 1 bird. I have 1 australorp, she is 3 and still laying well and shes a decent sized girl, and I have a golden laced wyandotte, also still laying and good size.

I had a wyandotte and i dont want anymore! She laid terribly and then of died of gout! How she got gout i have no idea. I always make sure all my chickens are clean and they always have fresh grass to scratch on.

I am just looking for some eggs for me and my grandpa to have so we dont have to buy from the store anymore. We are tired of having to buy nasty factory eggs for 3 or 4$ a dozen! I already have 10 hens but i want more and my grandpa wants about 25 good layers.

Anybody got any eggs?
