WTB Hatching Eggs

Hello all!

I'm new to chickens, having had my first flock just this year. All, save two, I lost to a wandering bear. I live in town right now but will be moving to our 40 acre ranch in April. I'm looking to hatch my own next year, rather than buy chicks from a hatchery, and thought it might be a good idea to find out how much eggs from good flocks are going for. I would like to have a mixed flock for meat and eggs and after reading about all the breeds have decided on the following: Heritage RIR, Jersey Giant (Black), Speckled Sussex, Silver-Laced Wyandotte, Dark Brahma, and Silver-Penciled Rock. Will anyone who has these breeds have hatching eggs available around mid-April, and if so how much do you charge?

Thanks!

Hi, of the grouping, we are carrying speckled sussex. We have not set our 2013 prices as of yet There will be a bit of an increase as we have had an increase in their feed cost. Generally we list our birds on the board, but we will also ask reservations. I hope to have our price list together by Jan. 15. I am sorry for your losses but happy for your move to a 40 acre ranch! Sounds great! Have a blessed evening.

Right now, we are selling an assortment (one dozen) for $20 plus $15 shipping to ship on November 26th. The assortment for this particular week would probably consist mainly of Blue/Black/Splash Ameraucanas, Buff Orpingtons, Barred Plymouth Rocks and Blue/Black/Splash Jersey Giants. We will have more breeds available in our assortment starting in January of 2013, but like the Garry Farm, we may have to go up next year to cover feed and fuel prices. You can see pictures of our birds at our website or we also have even more pictures on our Facebook page.

As far as predator-resistant egg layers go, you should consider Hamburgs. Their eggs may be small->medium but most of mine lay consistantly for up to 5 years. They're very bright birds. I have Silver Spangled but if I had to do it all over, I would get Silver Penciled just because they would be a little more camoflaged. Even the Gold coloration or the Blue (which would be blue, black,,and splash, ofcourse) would blend well.
I also have Dark Cornishl. All of my birds are bred from hatchery stock but I am very pleased with their output and wouldn't trade them for anything. If you would be interested, I would send you a dozen of each for $10 total.
Let me know and good luck w/everything,
hc
