WTH is wrong with TSC? Chick purchasing nightmare.

The state isn't collecting information. The dealers aren't required to report, only to keep records for two years. Thus if there is a problem there are resources available to track where certain stock went.

I have been to several farm stores in Utah and none of them will let you pick up the chicks yourself. This is, in part, to protect customers from disease (or so they claim). Have not ran into reporting requirements.

My impression of most of the farm stores is that the people working at them know next to nothing about chickens are give out a lot of bad advice (though I have not ran into any of them being rude). It is a convenient way to pick up a few chicks, however.

I saw the part about the exemptions from registration, but for some reason though that the part about record keeping was applicable regardless. It may or may not be... I suspect that is still the reason they are collecting names and addresses though.

Does it really matter? Concerns about TSC having my name on a list of "chick purchasers" doesn't even make my radar as a thing to be concerned about.

I was there today and they were behind gates. I thought it was odd, but they said their "chick expert" would help me. The lady was very nice, answered my questions and patiently picked out the ones I asked for. I didn't have to sign anything (I am in ND)

I think it is probably good they are regulating it, but it helps when they have a nice, knowledgeable employee helping!

Last week no gates, this week gates. I totally understand because every time I went in kids were picking up the chicks with minimal supervision from an adult. It made me nervous for the chicks sake. The TSC employee was nice and non-intrusive, and let me handle the chicks to see if I could identify the breed.

Wow, I consider myself lucky. The TSC near us has pretty cool employees.
They asked if I wanted help getting chicks and I said "sure if you would could you hold the box for me?".
They did just that. I hand picked my SLW and that was that.

I did have to sign the book, I asked why and they said it was in case of illness. If any reports of illness happen with the chicks you could be notified. IDK if that's true, but I would appreciate the phone call before I introduce something into my flock.

this is an excellent reason to quarantine any new birds for 30 days or so!!! otherwise you are paying your money and taking your chances with the health of your birds

We just bought chicks a couple weeks ago, they let us pic up the chicks no problem, and they did have us fill out imformation saying it was incase a disease or something broke out so they could warn us 0.o

we went to a local TSC here recently and u could not even get near the chicks they had them big livestock panels up around the bins so u could not touch or grab them

I have two TSC near my home and they both have them gated. I have two daughters 4 and 6 and the employees in both stores are great they get chicks out for them to see and pet. I was told they had to gate them due to liability issues apparantly someone was claiming there child became sick and was filing a legal suite against the company. At the stores I go to they have the kids use hand sanitizer after they handle the chicks. Unfortunately we all pay the price for the lawsuite happy society we live in today, corporations are scared to death of liabilities and this is just a way they are trying to protect themselves, I dont like it but I understand why they are doing it. Fortunately the associates that work in the TSC's that I shop are great about it.
