WV chickens in the news

I've been to Weirton WV many times when I used to work for the state. They do have way more rats up there, I'm sure!

If the Foley lady would have done something herself when she first found them, it wouldn't have gotten that bad.

Did you notice under the story there is a section of Top Stories, and one of them is titled

"Animal Control Officer Gets Infection From Weirton's Wild Chickens"

I wonder how much Foley paid him to get sick? That's the problem with Media these days, they can't just report the news, they have to create it. Nothing fair and balanced about that. Now everybody within 10 miles of these chickens is going to come down with some malady that they will swear came from the chickens. Then, the media will complain that the federal government isn't doing enough to help the "Victims" of the Wild Chicken Epidemic. After all, the sole purpose of news reporting these days is to create victims where ever they can. In fact, we are nothing more than a nation of victims. Makes me sick.

Hey, I wonder why the local housing authority hasn't provided homes for these wayward chickens. Seems to me their rights are being violated. I think we should take up a collection and engage the services of an attorney to act as Official Chicken Advocate for these birds.

The associated press has picked up the story. They will be off and running with it now....the local media, I mean.

Sounds like the animal control officer needs a lesson in how to clean a wound. What did he think the chicken was going to do?

Animal Control Officer Gets Infection From Weirton's Wild Chickens

An animal control officer was pecked and contracted an infection from a wild chicken in Weirton, the mayor said.

Mayor Mark Harris said the chickens in the Kings Creek section of the city are a safety hazard for everyone involved and said crews are doing their best to contain the flock.

He said there were only about 10 to 15 wild chickens a couple of decades ago. Now, he said there are about 100 chickens roaming the neighborhood.

"They wake up my babies, wake me up, they're dirty, disgusting, they're everywhere," said Christina Foley, a Wall Street resident.

Harris called the flock "dirty and infected," and said city leaders have been trying for nine months to corral the chickens -- with no luck.

Now, police Chief Bruce Marshall said crews will catch the chickens and "humanely deal with them." Further, he said a family who lives nearby is accused of feeding the flock and thereby making the situation worse.

"We are looking at different options (and) continuing doing what we are doing until they are caught," Marshall said.

A couple of decades ago? No wonder they are out of control. I'm now at a loss for words.

Oh, for goodness' sake. I love how they nebulously call it "an infection." I doubt he's been actually diagnosed with anything, or that would have been reported. He probably looked at a scratch on his hand and thought, "Yeah, that looks purty red, I bet that there is chicken-infected!" (So the news reported it, because it is so attention grabbing.)

I doubt they even bothered to check out the claim.

Doesn't sound like much of an animal control officer, either. So the chickens been there for 20 years, and JUST in the past nine months, officials got around to looking into the issue, since the poor fellow they sent over to talk Foley down apparently got pecked and a-skeert?

Very smart indeed. Just lovely.

Hmmmmm

, so I'm assuming these feral chickens are free range and unvaccinated. Soooo does this mean that my kiddos will get sick from hanging out in the run with my unvaccinated chickens?

Here I was concerned about our chipmunk infestation, now I have to worry about the kids getting something from our chickens, too! Some people, I bet those chickens are in better shape than the nieghborhood pets.
