WWYD: accidental Sevin Dusting

Wow, I am stunned, I have a thing of it that Mom gave me for the garden but the warnings on the label scared the crap out of me, so I was keeping it as far away from the girls as possible. :-o "Wear a dust mask when using, cover your whole body, holy moley DON'T EVEN LOOK AT IT!" LOL So I could have been using this all along...

All the warnings on a can of insecticide like Sevin is written by a Committee of Corporate Lawyers with the express purpose of covering the manufacturer's backside in case some snowflake decides to sue.

The warning or verbage on the back of the can/bottle/sack of pesticide has little or no connection to what the insecticide really is or to whatever potential it has to do harm. For instance, in the past the railroads in my home state ripped their tracks from the ground and abandoned their right-of-ways in certain counties of Alabama for the simple reason that no lawsuit could be legally filed against them in the courtrooms of certain judges whose Circuits encompassed those counties if the railroad in question was not engaged in business in those counties.

Lady Justice is often depicted as blind but don't you believe it. Justice is always peeking out of the corner of her blindfold and she is forever thinking of new and imaginative ways to do over the citizens that Lady Justice is supposedly charged with protecting. By comparison the rapacity of most Circuit Judges and their trial lawyer friends would put a 6 months old cockerel to shame. This is spoken by someone who has never had a case brought against him in any Circuit Court in this state but who has filed his share of cases against others. And yes I have had Circuit Judges shall we say "SUGGEST" that if I squared them before the case or petition was heard that a more favorable ruling would be forthcoming or at least a more speedy one.

Mark Twain I think it was once said, "Don't believe anything that you hear and only believe half of what you see."
This also applies to warning labels.

The whole insecticide thing is such a game these days... Somebody does some scientific study and finds that with huge amounts of use, whatever is more prone to cancer, auto-immune disease, lung disease etc. etc., so it is banned for widespread use/use on livestock that might be eaten, use during pregnancy/lactation etc. etc. Well people weren't using it for nothing, the need for it is still there. Still evil bugs eating your livestock, so whoever develops new insecticide (which no one knows anything about, because no studies have been done on it) and it is marketed and everyone buys and uses it until another study is done etc., etc, and the cycle continues. Fact of the matter is, it is quite possible that the earlier ones were better and less harmful than the newer ones that haven't been around long enough to know what the long term effects are. When I was young (some 50 years ago), if the chickens got mites, we sprayed the coop and the birds with malathion. Got rid of the bugs right away, no deleterious effect at all. we didn't even catch the birds to put it on, just sprayed them lightly as they walked around I had Silkies and we ate the eggs, my mother always liked to make bread pudding with them. And I am still here... We didn't have to do that every year, wild birds would only sometimes bring mites to the coop... I have dusted just about every kind of animal I have had at one time or another with sevin dust and it worked and no ill effects. Used it on dogs, cats, chickens, horses etc. Now, I mostly use Ivermectin, just because it is so easy, don't have to repeat and it solves the problem, though it is used so much I think at least the fleas are getting resistant. Which is the other problem with insecticides they can quit working because the bug develops resistance to them.

Yep, that was back in the heady days when the Grand Old Opry was sponsored by a product called Malathion DDT. And even to this very hour many many people in 3rd World Countries laugh at America and happily spray DDT wholesale. This includes the Mosquito Nets that are impregnated with DDT and are happily used to cover or wrap up babies, and small children to help prevent the millions and millions of cases of malaria each and every year.

One example of what BreanneRN is talking about is the case of the EU "SCIENTIST" who did a STUDY that supposedly proved that GMO corn caused cancer. Except that the rats that he used in his study were bred to develop cancer at a rate of 90%.
Then when his "STUDY" was complete his GMO fed rats only developed cancer at the reduced rate of 86% I guess this proves that GMOs cure cancer. JHC, even the Left Wing Nut Huff & Puff Post had to retract their endorsement of this supposedly SCIENTIFIC study..

You know I can't make this up, I am not that astute.

That bird will be fine. I use that stuff straight out of the can in their coop and right on the birds. I mix it in their dust bath area too. It is good stuff. They may have come up with some rules against it somewhere (somewhere that I never read) but we used to use it all the time for years with no detriment except to the mites and lice.

I have never heard of "Malathion DDT" which causes it to sound like they are the same thing. They are not. DDT has been banned in the states for close to 50 years, and Malathion is still approved for use in the USA to this day. In fact, they aerial sprayed it over my house a few years ago when they had an outbreak of West Nile Virus and didn't even ask anyone for permission to do so! And that is in California.... The probable reason is I live by a canal that intermittently has water in it.

Sevin is banned in the US for poultry use. (I am in the US, but was figuring if the main ingredient was still approved for our northern neighbors,
It's not banned, it's just not "labeled" for use in poultry.

Dont worry about it. I've used sevin dust many times and have eaten eggs after dusting. I'm still here typing.
