Hey all,
I am currently raising 11 Buff Orpington hens for my first flock and am trying to figure out what to do about roos. If none of my Orpingtons are roos, I would really love to get a Wyandotte roo because they are just so beautiful :D However, I have no idea if these too breeds will get along, if they will have chicks together/ what the chicks would be like, if its ok to only have one wyandotte roo amongst 11 BO hens, and things like that. I also do not know much about Wyandotte behavior... will the roo be super aggressive? has anyone had a mixture of these breeds that knows this kinda stuff? anything helps

Thank you!

You would be fine to mix breeds- they are called barnyard mixes and some can be quite beautiful. Some people like to keep breeds separate and others don't.

I have had a Wyandotte rooster that was mean, but chickens are individuals and really, there can be mean roosters in all the breeds pretty much, and nice ones as well. So the thing to do is to get a rooster you like no matter the breed, and keep him if he is a good boy and doesn't attack you. This is just my opinion. I have had Buff Orpington roosters who were nice but I didn't keep the boys all that long. (Don't keep the mean roosters because there are so many nice ones IMO.)

Wyandottes have different combs than Buff Orpingtons, and I don't know what the result of the cross will be, but here:

Wyandotte hens and Buff Orpington hens were about the same in disposition in terms of general behavior for me, with the exception that the BO hens were clingy and whiny, but the Wyandottes were not.

There are good and bad individuals of every breed. I have had well behaved Wyandotte roosters but your experience will depend on the particular personality of the cockerel you choose. Any offspring will be mixes and what they look like will vary according to what variety of Wyandotte you have (they come in many colors and patterns).

If you do hatch, have a plan in advance for the excess cockerels.
